À propos de cet audio
A small girl brings Joe Gunther a bird's nest - made partially of human hair. In the search to match a body - and an identity - to the hair's owner, Joe comes across an unexplained death, a grisly murder, and a sudden disappearance. All seem to be entangled in a puzzling web of municipal corruption, blackmail, and industrial espionage. A shell-shocked World War II veteran nicknamed the Ragman may hold the key to it all - but only if Joe can get him to talk before the murderer strikes again.

Another Terrific Story
The narrator really brings these stories to life but I'm amazed the author can come up with a unique storyline every time. Do I have a favorite book? No, they are equally good in their own way. Keep em coming.

Great Entry In The 'Gunther' Series
To this day, Archer Mayor continues to generate interesting Procedural/Mysteries featuring the empathetic but fiercely aggressive Brattleboro Vermont PD Lieutenant (and eventual 'Vermont Bureau of Investigation' agent) Joe Gunther.. year after year. This one - from the late 1990s - represents the author's storytelling pattern beautifully. Lieutenant Gunther leads us through a twisty-turny investigation that starts with the discovery of the remains of a streetwise young woman and proceeds through multiple (recognized at the last minute) murders and unscrupulous politically-connected developers. The characters are memorable, the interviews are realistic, and the forensics/procedures are spot-on (Mayor's research in these novels - aimed at lending an air of authenticity to the crimes/inquiries - is unsurpassed).
Less fortunately, the crime in this one is incredibly convoluted and Gunther's characteristic deductive reasoning takes a back seat to the "pure luck" of multiple events/deaths somehow coming together to reveal the underlying crime (which feels pretty implausible this time).
More fortuitously, Tom Taylorson's brilliant narration on this project elevates the book considerably. His comfortable timbre/cadence (enjoyable for hours of listening) is paired with professional diction, pitch-perfect tone, and cinematic voice-acting. If given the choice between this recording and a text version, take this one hands down.
'The Ragman's Memory' merits a more than respectable 8/10-stars. I have certainly read better from Mayor.. but if you can get this book as a 'Plus' selection, don't hesitate. It would actually rate the Credit.
[Incidentally: I have been listening to the 'Joe Gunther' novels in Chronological order (and I recommend it) - but this installment drove it home for me: the author is fantastic at making each novel more than capable of standing on it's own. You do not need to listen to previous books to "get caught up" (this book features a couple of characters that we have met before, for example.. but they fit in nicely - previous events have nothing to do with the current investigation). I have enough confidence in Mr. Mayor to conclude that you can feel free to jump into this series at any point]
