Solid story, excellent reading.
This is my favorite book in print, and the reading by Dennis Holland is nuanced in such a way that you find yourself drawn in even when you don't expect to.
The fact that his pitch and tone don't jump around a lot also make this performance brilliant to run in the background when you need to relax and sleep.

I love David Eddings writings!
A total departure from the Belgariad and its myriad spin offs. I love the characters, the storytelling of the writer and the engagement of the narrator. A long book, but definitely worth listening to. I enjoy Dennis Holland's interpretation of this book much more than the narration of Cameron Beierle in the Belgariad where pronunciation errors abound.Dennis has this book well in hand.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat
In their book The Rivan Codex David and Leigh Eddings outline their book writing formula. This book follows that formula, just as all the books they wrote previous to this one did. However, since this book is a standalone novel it lacks the depth of their series. The characters of this book are also poor copies and mashups of characters they created previously. Do yourself a favour and do not read this book, instead read The Belgariad or The Elenium series. The narrator tried, and even though he is good, no amount of good narration can elevate this novel from an overall rating of 1 star. It is rare for me to not finish a novel. I didn’t finish this one and it is first novel I’ve ever returned to audible.
