Good audio book

I enjoyed listening to this book but I don't think I would have been able to read it as at times it was slow, but overall not a bad book, I liked the second book better then the first.

Highly Annoying

Look - I love books of historical fiction that weave in supernatural elements so it takes a lot for me not to love a book like this and since it’s slim pickings in the witches + historical fiction department after you get through the best this is what it’s come to... The pluses - it’s a light fun and relaxing read that does make you want to hear the whole story. The premise is well conceived and the overall plot is interesting, Now what is wrong with it? ANNOYING MAIN CHARACTER. She’s supposed to super powerful and goodness itself and the narrator seems like a talented voice actor but she really lays it on rather thickly it’s irritating. The main character is actually NOT a remarkably good person (though she is clearly meant to be a paragon of virtue by the author’s lights)... She’s a narcissist who is So focused on herself and her own drama perpetually surprised when things predictably don’t work out bc she’s forgotten that the entire world doesn’t revolve around her. She is self-satisfied and maddeningly entitled and ungrateful to the people who are usually the nicest and she’s inconsistent insofar as sometimes she would lay down her life to protect a stranger but then thinks nothing of throwing people in harm’s way for her own benefit when it suits her. For a super powerful multi centenarian she lacks a lot of emotional maturity and hasn’t learned much and she proves herself completely useless constantly at the author’s lazy whims. Instead of working a skillful plot around the magic it’s all kind of low effort at times and when characters have to end up in situations they mysteriously loose their ability to think, problem-solve or seemingly to use magic and decide to lay down and die. They do this when they have a thousand obvious options at their disposal if the author feels it necessary to advance the plot that way.

We are also treated to a lot of self-righteous back-patting that is incredibly grating - scenes that might have been improved by some original content get taken up by highly repetitive and sometimes misplaced moralizing. There’s a lack of consistency where abilities and magic are concerned and it’s not compensated for by something like great historical research. The historical setting is a kind of superficial backdrop. I would have liked to see it used more and to see proof of intricate and deep historical research. Maybe the author did do that but if she did it not really seem immediately apparent to me.

Ahhh well. I’ll finish it but authoress please - can you make Elizabeth less of entitled pinched lady sometimes and give her the power and emotional maturity that you take and give back at your whim? Keep it consistent and work harder on the plot to advance the story rather than conveniently changing the nature of characters to create lazy obstacles fir the characters to overcome... I also wish each book had more storyline and more pages I think they could stand to be longer and you could do a more complex storyline with more space. Voice actor: a good reader better than many but I wish she would not lay it on so thick with the effects that are meant to convey righteousness Lack thereof - take it easy on the vibrato to communicate “high emotion” and the various cadences for different character. This may be fussy criticism on my part though bc she is essentially a really talented voice actor and I’m nitpicking - most likely on account of feeling crusty and the bits I found annoying in the story and character arcs.
