À propos de cet audio

From best-selling author Neal Stephenson and critically acclaimed historical and contemporary commercial novelist Nicole Galland comes a captivating and complex near-future thriller combining history, science, magic, mystery, intrigue, and adventure that questions the very foundations of the modern world.

When Melisande Stokes, an expert in linguistics and languages, accidently meets military intelligence operator Tristan Lyons in a hallway at Harvard University, it is the beginning of a chain of events that will alter their lives and human history itself. The young man from a shadowy government entity approaches Mel, a low-level faculty member, with an incredible offer. The only condition: She must sign a nondisclosure agreement in return for the rather large sum of money.

Tristan needs Mel to translate some very old documents, which, if authentic, are earth-shattering. They prove that magic actually existed and was practiced for centuries. But the arrival of the scientific revolution and the Age of Enlightenment weakened its power and endangered its practitioners. Magic stopped working altogether in 1851, at the time of the Great Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace - the world's fair celebrating the rise of industrial technology and commerce. Something about the modern world "jams" the "frequencies" used by magic, and it's up to Tristan to find out why.

And so the Department of Diachronic Operations - D.O.D.O. - gets cracking on its real mission: to develop a device that can bring magic back and send Diachronic Operatives back in time to keep it alive...and meddle with a little history at the same time. But while Tristan and his expanding operation master the science and build the technology, they overlook the mercurial - and treacherous - nature of the human heart.

Written with the genius, complexity, and innovation that characterize all of Neal Stephenson's work and steeped with the down-to-earth warmth and humor of Nicole Galland's storytelling style, this exciting and vividly realized work of science fiction will make you believe in the impossible and take you to places - and times - beyond imagining.

Full cast of narrators includes Robert Fass, James Foster, Tavia Gilbert, Arthur Morey, David Stifel, Charlie Thurston, and Kate Udall.

Elaborate time travel

Nifty quantum physics based magic which descends into Stephenson's usual bureaucratic horror story. Quite funny, neither hysterically so nor grand or epic in the other direction. Welll performed except for the heroine, who seems constantly petulant.

Interesting

I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I found it to be an interesting change from Stephenson's usual cerebral fare. As an audiobook, I found it was lacking something and I plan on buying a hard copy of this since I suspect that there will be more to the story than just the words on a page. I was constantly left with the feeling that the books layout was including tons of cute graphics or maybe some of it was laid out like documents from the DODO people.

Falls short but still recommend!

While not as fleshed out and engaging as my other favorites by Mr Stephenson I enjoy this book overall and would recommend anyone that has any interests in his other works give this one a try as well. #Audible1

Has real potential

loved the idea and imagination that went into this story...but the pacing is off. The authors get bogged down in details which at some points has the tendancy to be borring. But the final 1/4 of the book is really enjoyable.

Not bad if you like cheese

A little cheesy at times but overall an enjoyable listen. One male character sounds like a female one which is a little off putting but otherwise a fine performance.

Amazing narration

Interesting story made much better by the skilled narration - one of the best readers I’ve heard. Convincing voices!

History + Time Travel = Awesome

I loved it. Super fun. Great trips into the past, but clever twists on the classic time travel paradoxes. Stephenson never disappoints. I hope we hear more from D.O.D.O. #Audible1

Interesting idea, really too long execution

The idea of writing this book as first-person reports and correspondences is creative, but the whole story was tedious. I wanted to give up around chapter 17 (of 43) but after getting through a couple of hours of boring and unnecessary company development sub plots, the narrative picked up just enough to keep going.

Overall, I liked the voice actors and the concept of the story, but I'm glad it's finally over (the listening). If the is a second book in the series, I will not be reading it.

Unusual

Wasn't sure what to expect from this, and it's not a time-travel story. Think entertaining bureaucracy with witches. And history. A Unique take on the form, and not your usual plot line.

Excellent book, spectacular narrating

The story itself was immediately enthralling, and very entertaining, although the ending wasn't the most satisfying, and it did drag a little bit in the middle. Not Stephenson's best work, but it definitely meets his usual high standard.

The narration was fantastic, although I would've preferred if everyone had the same actor throughout.
