À propos de cet audio

A new darkness is rising in Belterra. This dark and thrilling vampire romance—set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Serpent & Dove series—is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas.

Six months have passed since Célie took her sacred vows and joined the ranks of the Chasseurs as their first huntswoman. With her fiancé, Jean Luc, as captain, she is determined to find her foothold in her new role and help protect Belterra. But whispers from her past still haunt her, and a new evil is rising—one that Célie herself must vanquish, unless she falls prey to the darkness.

An Enthralling Paranormal Story

An enthralling, slow burn paranormal fantasy, THE SCARLET VEIL is perfect for lovers of vampires and gothic elements. The story takes place after the SERPENT & DOVE series and follows Célie as she attempts to overcome her trauma and join the ranks of the Chasseurs as their first female hunter.

Célie is a good character because while she tries to emulate the other women in her life, she is her own person. Watching her grow to realize this is a rewarding experience, because I was always interested in her. As she's thrown into a situation she is truly not prepared for, it was rewarding to see her persevere in her own way.

Michal is intriguing and intense, unapologetic in his rule. I enjoyed his interactions with Célie as he tried to keep her out of trouble, which led to engaging scenes between the two of them. The side characters are layered and unique, and while I was glad to see old faces, it was fun to meet new characters.

The world is elegant, dark, and captivating. The prose is solid and the pacing, while on the slower scale, is nonetheless right for this sort of story. Even when there wasn't a lot of action, I was never bored and always wanted to read more. The ending was intense and I am ready to see what happens next.

This is a great book for anyone who is familiar with the SERPENT & DOVE series, but I think it still holds up on its own and should not be missed, especially if you love gothic romances, vampires, and anything supernatural!

I want to DNF this book, I'm hoping that changes because the narration is excellent and the world building is decadent.

I'm left unhappy with the trope of the broken female heroine. Celie acts like a spoiled impetuous child, her privilege and naivety are upsetting. I believe this is deliberate on the part of the author, at least I hope it is. If she has intentionally made her character so trite as to illicit the kind of distaste I feel for the female protagonist, then that speaks volumes of her craft.

I want to love this book, it's moving me to chastise Celie and call her out on her immaturity and self absorption. I want to see how she grows I hope she does grow. At present I can barely stand to hear any more of her impotent anger and insistence that she is her own woman all while she relies on everyone else around her to fight her battles. Celie in these first six chapters is a spoiled little girl parading as a war hero, she may have survived, she may have vanquished a great evil, but she didn't grow from her experience. It i's far too easy to say it is her trauma blocking her - that might be what disgusts me most - the choice Celie makes to continually insist she is well and capable when she is not.

The female protagonist spends no time to actually embody her experience or use it as her strength. Instead she pridefully insists on being treated as an equal even while she puts others at risk with her frailty and lack of forethought. Failing that she falls back on asking for special treatment because of intimate relationships, all while her internal dialogue works hard to persuade the reader/listener of her inability to actually "think before she acts" because of her brokeness. She isn't too broken to dive headlong into peril an expect others to save her though, which they to this point in my listening always seem to do without fail. She in return disregards rules and convention, insists on her way, refuses to consider her behavior or its consequences, so in essence she only seems to to be able to treat her saviors as oppressors or idiots because in her perspective "they simply can't see it how I see it".

I prefer stories where the damsels save themselves, where the refusal of convention is met with actualized self - reliance and growth instead of tripping endlessly over "feminine hysterics" only to be saved by a man. This kind of ruins the book so far for me, I hope the author intentionally wrote her character so flawed so that her growth becomes something transformative. As it stands this is a beautifully crafted almost decadent narrative that is marred by the stereotypical damsel in distress tropes of helplessness and flippancy.

I will revise once I finish or once I decide not to finish...
