À propos de cet audio

Upon the death of her father, Mary Bennet’s life is thrown into turmoil. With no fortune or marriage prospects, she must rely on the kindness of her relatives. When a mysterious late-night visit by an unknown relative - a Lady Trafford from Castle Durrington - leads to an extended stay and the chance for an education, Mary gratefully accepts the opportunity.

But even as she arrives at the castle, she’s faced with one mystery after another. Who is Lady Trafford really, and what is she hiding? Do her secrets and manipulations place the small seaside community at risk of an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte? Always curious, Mary sets out to discover the answers. But when she finds the dead body of a would-be thief she outed prior to her father’s funeral, she jeopardizes her position at the castle and her family’s good name in her quest for the truth.

A mostly tedious prequel to a series that one hopes will be better

This is an era I love, a genre I visit often (Napoleonic War with a hint of spies / intrigue) but I will wait to sample the other books via library rather than buying.
This supposedly redemptive novel emphasizes all the worst elements of Mary Bennett’s character from Pride & Prejudice. She is pompous, dull, ungrateful, unyielding, and frankly unpleasant. She overthinks everything and yet leaps to erroneous conclusions with unconvincing facility. I got tired of her unwillingness to learn from past mistakes and basically kept listening between other books only so I could see whether my early assumptions about other characters would prove true.

The narrator was quite good at making the most of unpromising material.

There likely are readers less picky for whom this book is just the ticket.

Great story and narration

This book answers the question, "What qualities does Mary, the most boring of the Bennet sisters, have that would be interesting to write/read a book about" and the answer is, "her curiosity, stubbornness, memory skills, and general plain appearance that no one notices would make her a really good spy". It worked; I loved it.

I don't read a lot of Jane Austen sequels but this one seemed interesting and I'm glad I gave it a shot. I also am really glad I listened to the audiobook of this. It made it suspenseful and I cleaned my entire house just to hear more. I might have enjoyed reading it but the narration is what really made it 5 stars for me.

At first I wasn't sure about the narrator, but she actually does an excellent job with all of the characters, making them distinct, and using several dialectal accents. Mary is Mary. She's still sometimes annoying and her voice reflects that.

The characters were well done and I was thankful the author didn't change Mary too much.

The plot is really interesting and the setting described beautifully. I enjoyed it because I've been in the actual area it takes place so I could picture it. The details were well-researched and explained. I enjoyed the snippets of real newspapers from the time to keep track of the date. Overall, I'd say the author is skilled at this time period. I never felt that things were too modern.

The only thing I'd change is the cover image - I can't stand the gown the girl is wearing or her hair.

I'm really excited for the next book and yes I got it from Audible right as soon as I finished this one.
