À propos de cet audio
The Secret Lives of Church Ladies explores the raw and tender places where Black women and girls dare to follow their desires and pursue a momentary reprieve from being good. The nine stories in this collection feature four generations of characters grappling with who they want to be in the world, caught as they are between the church's double standards and their own needs and passions.
There is 14-year-old Jael, who has a crush on the preacher's wife. At 42, Lyra realizes that her discomfort with her own body stands between her and a new love. As Y2K looms, Caroletta's "same time next year" arrangement with her childhood best friend is tenuous. A serial mistress lays down the ground rules for her married lovers. In the dark shadows of a hospice parking lot, grieving strangers find comfort in each other.
With their secret longings, new love, and forbidden affairs, these church ladies are as seductive as they want to be, as vulnerable as they need to be, as unfaithful and unrepentant as they care to be, and as free as they deserve to be.

stories that pulled me in
I really enjoyed this book. I felt a connection to the theme of double standards within the church. Even when a story made me think, “wth are they for real” or “that couldn’t be me”, it was because the stories drew me in and really made me feel like I was there, watching a character go through it, while also wanting to fight their battle for them. Philyaw got me in my feels, y'all (I know, but I'm corny!), and I loved every minute of it.

Excellent short stories
This book was recommended by a British writer on the Guardian website and I have to say, it was brilliant. Interesting, fresh stories from varying perspectives within a culture that I don't have ties to, but with whom I could connect. These are easily worthy for literary study and I would happily read this author again.

Authentically Amazing
I loved this incredible work. It should be required reading for modern lit. Each woman protagonist came to life as her story unfolded in such a vivid and palpable way. For anyone who grew up in a version of the Black church in the western hemisphere, this will feel like home and like hell sometimes. Cannot wait to read it again and to read more from this author.
