À propos de cet audio
Energy medicine. Acupuncture. Superfoods. Healing magnets. What does the scientific evidence really say about these and other "alternative medicine" treatments for personal wellness?
How can we know if a natural remedy is safe and effective? How can people become their own best skeptical consumer of health news in the media? Join neurologist and science educator Dr. Steven Novella for a fascinating exploration of these and other important questions about the truths—and myths—behind alternative medicine.
Perhaps the most important skill to have in this brave new world of ever-changing medical news is the ability to evaluate sources and information, and to think critically about how alternative medicine is marketed, regulated, and used. Dr. Novella takes a rigorous, science-based approach in exploring so-called "popular" and "cutting-edge" trends. Armed with this knowledge, listeners will be in a much better position to assess alternative pathways to physical health.
Dr. Novella’s 10 leading-edge lectures will answer such questions as:
- Do magnetic fields really have useful biological properties?
- Why is chiropractic treatment no more effective for pain management than simple physical therapy?
- Can brain games truly make one smarter or help in staving off dementia?
- Can homeopathic remedies, such as those derived from plants and minerals, really cure ailments?
- Does cupping therapy really help to reduce pain and inflammation, while increasing blood flow?
Dr. Novella provides insights on the ever-widening gap between alternative medicine and scientific medicine, giving listeners the confidence they need to become their own best health advocates.

Clear Concise Overview of Alternative Medicine
Thanks to Dr. Novella for such an amazing work.
* it reviewed the medicine itself and how are different approaches are evolved to make it work better and what are Scientific Based Medicine (SBM) and what is Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and how they are working in unison.
* it goes to many difficulties that the science and medicine faces and then,
It brings how the traditional methods and ancient knowledge has contributed to the medecine and how we have pruned the good and bad from the old and new medicine.
* It continues to one by one explain different alternative medicines and how they have been reviewed for efficacy by all sides.
*** A very interesting part of this book is clearing how a proper research can be so effective and how we can study the efficacy of a claim in medicine or alternative medicine can be reviewed. I kind of enjoyed how nicely it was explained:
What is a good study. What is a blind study. What is double blind. What is placebo effect.
* then it goes to give a history of each of alternative medicines and how they have been coming around and the studies to find if they are working or not.
You will find this a great chance to make sense of it all.
I suggest to listen to it in chunks to give you a time to absorb the invaluable information.
Enjoy.
I am happy I found this author and figured he has more publications to check.

Skeptic is right
If hope were currency alternative medicine would be bankrupt. Despite being science-based I am still not convinced alternatives are completely useless. The narration was good, it was easy to listen to, but hard to be enthusiastic when we know the end is dire,

I’m sceptical the author wanted to be fair.
The author seems to have cherry picked his information to be as negative as possible while sounding like he fairly evaluated evidence. Several of the modalities spoken about are centuries old but given little credence.
If I was to listen to this book and base my healthcare only on what’s here I would do nothing which is exactly what medicine should not encourage.
A rather disappointing listen, especially considering some of these modalities have helped me personally.

This is a Pharma Sales Rep's book.
I listened to the ENTIRE audiobook to give it a chance. The author is SKEPTIC to the point that you can tell he has been brainwashed by med schools funded by the Pharmaceutical industry. It is "doctors" like this that keep people ill. It is obvious that the only way people can be cured is with chemicals, according to the author. I know people that have been sent home to die after all cancer medical "treatments" have been exhausted, only to change their diet and survive , CANCER FREE. You know Typed 2 diabetes can be cured, but not according to this author. Suggest you instead download "Never Be Sick Again" Raymond Francis, M. Sc. An MIT educated Chemist that "modern medicine" nearly killed. In this suggested book, the ONLY TWO ways someone gets sick is 1. Your cells are nutrient deficient or 2. your cells are toxic. THAT'S IT! Sickness NEVER happens without a cause. Sickness is NOT a shortage of pharmaceutical drugs. Another excellent download (free) to listen to is Doctor Yourself by Andrew W. Saul, Ph. D. another excellent reference Let me make one thing perfectly clear. If I was ever in a car accident-I want a doctor. To keep me healthy and avoid disease (and drugs), I want a Naturopath.
