À propos de cet audio

Marooned in outer space after an attack on his ship, Nomad, Gulliver Foyle lives to obsessively pursue the crew of a rescue vessel that had intended to leave him to die.

When it comes to pop culture, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) is something of an unsung hero. He wrote radio scripts, screenplays, and comic books (in which capacity he created the original Green Lantern Oath). But Bester is best known for his science fiction novels, and The Stars My Destination may be his finest creation. With its sly potshotting at corporate skullduggery, The Stars My Destination seems utterly contemporary, and has maintained its status as an underground classic for over 50 years.

Iconic main character and world

This is a rare and unique book that innovated the architype of a cyberpunk future dominated by corporations.
Its main character is one of my favourites; he cannot be described as a good guy or a bad guy. He's a guy who's dead inside, but his unbreakable will and determination forces the world around him to yelid. His beyond brutal reality contaminated his soul and his path to redemption takes him beyond what I can comprehend. I love that.

This book stands as one of the pillars that got me into audiobooks.

Entertaining Classic

I can see how this 1956 Science Fiction adventure is considered influential (it certainly has a lot of themes and elements of the gritty "Cyberpunk" subgenre that William Gibson made manifest.. but also has plenty of Robert Heinlein & Philip K. Dick stylistic similarities).
Alfred Bester offers a story about single-minded revenge that echoes Dumas - except Bester's version of 'The Count Of Monte Cristo' features an "eventually supportable" straight-up POS (rapist/murderer) as a protagonist instead of an admirable Edmond Dantès. The book is well-written and interesting, but never really captivated me (the SciFi elements like "jaunting" - self-teleportation - and surgical cybernetic enhancement are central to the plot but underused.. and the ending is so philosophical that the preceeding 90% of the book feels wasted).

As to presentation: Gerard Doyle exhibits professional enunciation, spot-on tone, and has a most pleasant Irish brogue (timbre, cadence) that is comfortable for hour after hour of listening.. but his performance on this project is lacking when taken in toto. Doyle's voice-acting includes an annoyingly gruff Gulliver "Gully" Foyle and an irritating cartoonish affected 'female" voice for Jisbella McQueen. I'm a fan of Mr. Doyle - but the errors render his narration distinctly "average" here.

Altogether, I rate 'The Stars My Destination' 8 stars out of 10. It was a more than worthwhile listen as a 'Plus' option.. but would be a questionable investment of a Credit.
