In August 1939, just days before World War II broke out in Europe, a Jewish man in Vienna named Alfred Berger mailed a desperate letter to a stranger in America who shared his last name.
"By pure chance I got your address...I beg you instantly to send for me and my wife...."
Decades later, journalist Faris Cassell stumbled upon the stunning letter and became determined to uncover the story behind it. How did the American Bergers respond? Did Alfred and his family escape Nazi Germany? Over a decade-long investigation, Cassell traveled thousands of miles; explored archives and offices in Austria, Belarus, Israel, and the Czech Republic; interviewed descendants; and found letters, photos, and sketches made by family members during the Holocaust.

A very shockingly honest read
The story was disturbing but also heart warmingly honest. Everyone should read it.

A great read.
I enjoyed this immensely. Can’t even imagine the effort this took. I didn’t want it to end. Such sorrow, but left with successful legacy. Thank you.

Well done!
Brilliant research and beautifully told. Very accurate. I have a similar story from my parents but this time is was viennese Jews desperately trying to get out of Shanghai in 1945. Thank you!

Great insights into Austria pre-WWII
What launched the research into this true story was intriguing, and what the author was able to discover and uncover is truly remarkable.
After all I have learned about WWII, there is always so much more to learn. With this account it was more on the extraordinary lengths Jews went through to get out of Europe. It is amazing how many did get out.
Ships of refugees turned away when they reached their destination was distressing to learn of.
It’s a touching story regardless. A good listen.
