À propos de cet audio
At once a sensual and irresistible mystery and a haunting work of psychological insight and emotional depth, The Whole World marks the beginning of a brilliant literary career for Emily Winslow, a superb, limitlessly gifted author.
Set in the richly evoked pathways and environs of Cambridge, England, The Whole World unearths the desperate secrets kept by its many complex characters—students, professors, detectives, husbands, mothers—secrets that lead to explosive consequences.
Two Americans studying at Cambridge University, Polly and Liv, both strangers to their new home, both survivors of past mistakes, become quick friends. They find a common interest in Nick, a handsome, charming, seemingly guileless graduate student. For a time, the three engage in harmless flirtation, growing closer while doing research for professor Gretchen Paul, the blind daughter of a famed novelist. But a betrayal, followed by Nick’s inexplicable disappearance, brings long-buried histories to the surface.
The investigation raises countless questions, and the newspapers report all the most salacious details—from the crime that scars Polly’s past to the searing truths concealed in photographs Gretchen cannot see. Soon the three young lovers will discover how little they know about one another, and how devastating the ripples of long-ago actions can be.

Good thing it was free I definitely would have returned it
Not very exciting story… loses you in the middle of the book because of loss of interest.

Impressive
Emily Winslow is a quality author. The crime in this novel (the disappearance of a Cambridge Graduate Student) isn't particularly engrossing.. and the overall mystery aspects of the plotting are pretty boring.. but Winslow masterfully teases revelations, delivers twists & turns at a captivating pace (renewing interest frequently), writes realistic dialogue & excellent descriptions, and makes use of a fascinating storytelling technique: switching point of view multiple times throughout the chronicle. On top of that, she is a true wordsmith - carefully using an economy of words while still providing text rich in atmosphere and nuance.
The decision by Audible Studios Inc. to use five readers to read the five different sections of the book was a good one, too. Each provides professional performances with regards to diction, cadence, timbre, and tone. Unfortunately, British readers exhibit poor American accents and American readers deliver truly *terrible* British accents. Taking into consideration the subpar voice-acting, I have to say that the narration detracts from the story.
Overall, 'The Whole World' merits 8.5 stars out of 10. It's a no-brainer audiobook choice if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection (included with membership).. because even paying a Credit for it would be supportable.
If you are given the option of buying a text (paper or eBook) version of this book rather than this recording, however.. do so. The weak performance detracts from the enjoyability.
