À propos de cet audio
She thought she had married her soul mate. But when Carol Kennedy could no longer tolerate her husband's reckless womanizing and out-of-control spending, the artist, therapist, and mother of two had to let him go. Just weeks after their divorce, Carol was found in her Arizona ranch home - bludgeoned to death with a golf club. Her ex, Steven DeMocker, was the prime suspect. Yet it took the authorities months to arrest him - and years to convict....

Meticulous Exposé.. But That Pacing..
This Caitlin Rother offering badly needs an Editor. Her research is typically impeccable, but the dedication to describing every last scrap of evidence ("receipts showed that she purchased a bottle of Brut champagne for $14.75 at 8:04 PM", for example) led to my wanting to scream at my device: "GET ON WITH IT!!".
To be certain, a major element of the book is the obstinate resistance to the prosecution by the accused's daughters & girlfriends (including false alibis and a scheme to use the victim's estate to pay for her killer's defense!!) and shady tactics used by both defense and prosecution - necessitating in-depth discussions of legal wrangling and prosecution assertion minutiae - but the consequent glacial documentary progression is incredibly frustrating.
Those storytelling issues are quite unfortunate - because Rother's writing is capable, her exploration of perpetrator/victim/investigator personalities is thoughtful, and the case details are captivating.. but the sheer number of evidence entries (perpetrator/victim background facts & forensic evidence) is overwhelming. Rother gleefully tries to document each and every one of them, yielding a book that often feels like the author is simply presenting a list of State's Exhibits A through Z. *yawn*
Fortuitously for audiobook aficionados, Tantor Audio sound engineers - exemplary in mixing & splicing - work with reader Callie Beaulieu to present a fine listening product. Beaulieu betrays some disinterest during the driest segments of the text (clearly just reading what's sitting open on her lap), but otherwise maintains impressive diction, timbre, cadence, and tone. The voice-acting is also a bit suspect at times, but this is a commendable performance overall.
Altogether, 'Then No One Can Have Her' merits 6 stars out of 10. If given the option between a text version of the book or this recorded iteration, choose this one.. but save your Credit if they ask for one.
(Note: as a 'Plus' selection, it was a serviceable True Crime distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons. Downloading it would be defensible).
