À propos de cet audio
Part memoir, part explosive window into the mind of a catfisher, a thrilling personal account of three women coming face-to-face with an internet predator and teaming up to expose them.
In 2011, three successful and highly educated women fell head over heels for the brilliant and charming Ethan Schuman. Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Ethan wasn't after money—he never convinced his marks to shell out thousands of dollars for some imagined crisis. Rather, he ensnared these women in a web of intense emotional intimacy. After the trio independently began to question inconsistencies in their new flame's stories, they managed to find one another and uncover a greater deception than they could've ever imagined. As Anna Akbari and the women untangled their catfish’s web, they found other victims and realized that without a proper crime, there was no legal reason for “Ethan” to ever stop.
THERE IS NO ETHAN catalogues Akbari's experience as both victim and observer. By looking at the bigger picture of where these stories unfold—a world where technology mediates our relationships; where words and images are easily manipulated; and where truth, reality, and identity have become slippery terms—Akbari gives a page-turning and riveting examination of why stories like Ethan's matter for us all.

Interesting, but feels like a personal vendetta
The story was quite interesting, especially when we learn who Ethan is and the effort he made to perpetuate the lies. however the story was the same for each woman: desperate to catch a successful man and couldn't let go when it was obvious something was wrong. Not unlike like the stereotypical sidechick who refuse to see the reality. it was painful to listen to how they were duped repeatedly, despite the red flags. Spoiler alert...I'm not making excuses for Emily Slutsky. She sounds like a manipulative psychopath and I too question her suitability to be a doctor. That said, many successful professionals are self serving manipulative psychopaths and many do far worse things than Ms Slutsky.which we never hear about. The book gave no evidence that Emily Slutsky continued her behaviour beyond 2014, which is why this appears to be vengeful. nevertheless, it's a good reminder to walk away from romantic prospects who promise high and deliver low.

There Is No Ethan
Could not stop listening to this book and can’t believe I got through it in under 2 days! Loved listening to Anna tell her story. The circumstances were equally fascinating and disturbing to unpack and her delivery made it for me.

Prepare to be blown away by Anna Akbari's true cri
Just when I thought the most shocking part of the book had been revealed, it just kept getting better! I could not put this book down for days. I ordered the audiobook initially and realized that I HAD to read it on paper. So then I ordered the book and read and listened to it jointly the first time. The idea that this professional is still working as a professional is absolutely appalling! I couldn't just read it once though, I also reread the book slower, each piece of this book provides additional details. The way that Akbari wrote this was absolutely incredible. I could and will reread this 100 more times and know that I will find new pieces of the story that I missed the time before. This is a MUST READ. I typically don't read non-fiction and am VERY picky about what will keep my attention in a book; this was at the top of my list! Go get this book now! You'll be shocked, captivated, angry, and thoroughly enjoy this unbelievable true crime story!

GO Fish!
This story is captivating, heart wrenching, and heroic. Ana does a wonderful job pulling you in and keeping you there. My only critique is that it is longer than needed but that’s very common.

Did not finish.
I had to quit this book. I found Ethan to be extremely unlikable and annoying through their interactions. So much so that I didn't think I could keep listening to it for the promised payoff of the identity reveal.
I googled the reveal and I am glad I saved myself the time.

not for me
I felt the protagonist made bad choices and had egregiously low standards. The voice of the author was hard to listen to without being distracted be the downturned voice inflection at the end of each sentence.

Boring, painful listen
I purchased this audiobook because I am a fan of the Sweet Bobby and Dirty John podcast. It is rare to hear directly from the voice of the victim. I thought as a sociologist with a Ph.D, this author might over some interesting insight on why she and other women fell for this con. There is a bit of this at the epilogue.
This was an awful long painful listen. I had to listen to small 15 minutes chunks at a time. I skipped alot of the retelling of victim #2 and #3's virtual relationship. I would have liked more self reflection during the author's own retelling of her own experience. If I had borrowed this book from the library I would not have finished it. I felt compelled to listen to alot of it BC I spent 1 audible credit on it. That said, I admire the author for not letting this con artist get away with it the con.
