And there are others, like the houseboy who loved Vera, whose lives might have taken different courses if not for Abel Paisley’s actions.

This “rich and layered story” (Kirkus Reviews) explores the ways each character wrestles with their ghosts and struggles to forge independent identities outside of the family and their trauma. This story is fascinatingly complex. I did have to keep track of the characters because it was confusing at times. Even with that, Maisy Card wrote a fascinating, generational story, with folklore! I was glued to my seat and even found myself saying "mmm", like it was my tantie or uncle telling me the story. It felt like Caribbean magic realism (if that's already a thing, I apologize for my ignorance) and it was refreshing as I've never read it from a relatable perspective before. I will say that the book feels more like a collection of short stories: some of them relate to each other and some don't. If you see it like that, instead of a "typical" novel with fluid chapters, it may be easier to enjoy, including the ending. I removed one star because the print version has a family tree in it, and I think the audiobook should have had a PDF version with which to follow along.

What is truly fantastic is Karl O'Brian Williams' narration! He is excellent! I love it when Jamaicans narrate Jamaican books! I hope he does many more audiobooks in the future!
