Description

A gripping crime thriller full of stunning twists and turns.

When DI Rowan Jackman and DS Evans are told that the IT boss has disappeared, they soon suspect foul play. Orla Cracken, known as Orac, is no ordinary techie; she was once a field agent traveling abroad undercover, working for the government.

Meanwhile DC Robbie Melton discovers that two people, both urban explorers, have mysteriously disappeared whilst out exploring abandoned buildings. One went missing at a disused airfield, but was it a military base, or was it civilian?

The gruesome discovery of their decaying bodies found hanging in ancient church ruins bursts the case wide open, and Jackman and Evans are under pressure to find the killer. With Orac safely back in the picture following a secret journey to Ireland to try and find her long-lost sister who went missing as a child, the hunt is now on to find the killer before he hangs his next victim.

It soon becomes clear that the killer is targeting urban explorers, but why is he determined to track down and torture these innocent people, and how is the case connected to Orac’s mysterious past, still shrouded in secrecy?

The latest gritty crime thriller by Joy Ellis, set in the Lincolnshire Fens, will keep you guessing – and your pulse racing – until the very end.

Impressive!

I'm impressed that Joy Ellis creates so many good stories using familiar characters and location, while making each story unique with its own plots and twists, and character arcs. I never tire of listening to Richard Armitage narrate the stories, he is perfect for these stories.

Builds to an intriguing end

So far have not been disappointed with this series, the narrator brings it to life and Joy Ellis builds the characters involved with care and allows for their personalities to emerge in each storyline

I am so hooked

This is Book 7 of this series and I've listened to them, with a couple of exceptions, one after the other. The Narrator is so good that other ones will be hard to get used to. The stories are all unique and Joy Ellis' style of writing is addicting. I have read so much in my life, my favourite genre is Suspense and Mystery, and for me, this series is at a level of its own. Thank you!

Creditable UK Procedural Audiobook

This 7th installment in the 'Jackman & Evans' series provides readers with more background for the fascinating 'Fenland CID' IT expert Orla "Orac" Cracken - an enigmatic officer with a platinum blonde mohawk, polished chrome contact lenses, a Northern Irish past steeped in violence, and a fierce - almost pathological - insistence on remaining unknown to her colleagues (not even her closest coworkers are aware that she lives across the street from the constabulary, for example). Mixed in with Joy Ellis's elaboration of the character is a captivating inquiry into the disappearance of multiple "Urban Explorers" - abducted from the abandoned buildings that they explore. The mystery is well-paced and loaded with suspects and plausible twists & turns.
Less fortunately, complaints from reader-reviewers that the investigation feels irritatingly disconnected are legitimate. Ellis's mandate to weave the plotlines together is far from flawless.. and the balance between gritty Mystery-Thriller (one that's actually quite gruesome at times) and almost sappy "we-love-each-other-sooooooooo-much" team-building is never effectively achieved.

Solidly on the positive side for audiobook consumers, however: this may be the best performance that I have heard from Richard Armitage.
He exhibits his characteristic spot-on diction, timbre, and cadence.. but also an interested pitch-perfect tone and remarkably realistic accents (English, Welsh, Irish, American, French, etc). Bravo.

In toto, 'They Disappeared' rates 8.5 stars out of 10. Download and Enjoy.

[Incidentally: the straight-up coddling of colleagues - including Path-techs FFS - around *potentially* traumatic Crime Scenes is headshakingly nonsensical. Are they professionals or not?]

Loved the history in this mystery!

I really enjoyed the history in this mystery by Joy Ellis and narrated so well by Richard Armitage! In my personal life I'd been enjoying photos of historical urban decay, and then found this novel was centred around it! Having a WWII fighter pilot father-in-law stationed in the very area talked about at the end of the novel made it even more personal for me. Glad it stopped there and didn't include the murders! Good to see Orac a big part of this one. Now, sadly, to read the final one: 'The Night Thief'!
