À propos de cet audio

The Great War is over, but one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun.

England, 1919. Verity Kent's grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity's first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much - including the fact that during the war Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.

Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney's fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside and discovers dark secrets - along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined and comes face-to-face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It's a truth that could set her free - or draw her ever deeper into his deception.

Because a few reviews have been unfavourable to the narrator, I have to comment. Heather Wilds did a great job narrating this book. Coming off another book with more colourful characters, it took me a bit of time to come around to the performance in this book. The main character isn’t one of those nosy, meddling characters who gets themselves into mischief while solving a murder, so they should not be narrated as such. I didn’t like the book at first because of it. Giving the book a second chance, however, I realized Heather Wilds’ performance choice was perfect for the character she was narrating. She brought the reserved character to life.

The story was a good mystery. Well written. I especially appreciated the attention to historical detail.

Great performance. Good story.

While the reader/ narrator is geographically relevant to the story, making her flub her way through gross editorial blunders such as the United Kingdom & Commonwealth Forces having First Lieutenants is unforgivable. Where is the editorial vigour?

Regrettable

The "narrator" merely reads the book with little change of tone, frequently emphasing the wrong words and making no distinction between thoughts and speech. This makes it often confusing for the listener. I will purchase the next book in series as an ebook.

Good story, poor reader

Although the story was engaging, the monotone of the narrator was quite boring, and at first, I almost quit listening.

I enjoyed the story of this book. Unfortunately I found it quite wordy, too descriptive and too long including parts that were unnecessary to the story. I'll go on to read the next book and go from there.
