À propos de cet audio
The Great War is over, but one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun.
England, 1919. Verity Kent's grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity's first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much - including the fact that during the war Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.
Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney's fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside and discovers dark secrets - along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined and comes face-to-face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It's a truth that could set her free - or draw her ever deeper into his deception.

Good story, poor reader
The "narrator" merely reads the book with little change of tone, frequently emphasing the wrong words and making no distinction between thoughts and speech. This makes it often confusing for the listener. I will purchase the next book in series as an ebook.

Regrettable
While the reader/ narrator is geographically relevant to the story, making her flub her way through gross editorial blunders such as the United Kingdom & Commonwealth Forces having First Lieutenants is unforgivable. Where is the editorial vigour?

Wonderful historical mystery
Verity is invited to an engagement party set on an island just off the English coast. It is being held by her deceased husband’s commander and his bride to be. She was not going to attend the weekend party until she receives a mysterious letter accusing her husband of treason. She was determined to find out the truth. What she did not count on was the guest list, the secrets, the danger and the murder.
This is the first book of the Verity Kent Mystery Series and is set just post WWII. The characters are masterfully created with distinct and interesting personalities complete with strengths and weakness. Verity is an amazing strong, intelligent woman who seems to pop off the pages and engage you in her adventure. The narrative is extremely well done giving detailed information on the scenery, the dresses, the entertainment and political climate allowing you to imagine the time period in which the story takes place. I really liked that the war was not glorified but rather hinted at the atrocities the fighting men and those at home struggled with. The mystery was captivating, full of danger, misdirection, unexpected twists, surprising turns, great suspects and an intense build up of suspense. I was glued to the story’s to the end. I highly recommend this amazing mystery written by a very talented author.
The performance was extremely well done and made the experience of the book just that much better.

Boring narration
Although the story was engaging, the monotone of the narrator was quite boring, and at first, I almost quit listening.

good book
I enjoyed the story of this book. Unfortunately I found it quite wordy, too descriptive and too long including parts that were unnecessary to the story. I'll go on to read the next book and go from there.

Just this side of excellent
I enjoyed the story and was pleased with how the mystery was slowly revealed... Some parts were more predictable but the basic plot (and its unravelling) was well worth the read.
The performance was also good... the pace of delivery was very well done, and the tone of voice seemed to capture the essence of those people of a certain station.

GOOD ENTERTAINMENT
having enjoyed tremendously both Anna Lee Hooper and Heather Wilds in the Lady Darby series... and having finished them all... I thought I would try Verity's story. I was not disappointed?

Narrator needs coaching
I had a difficulty actually listening to the book because the person performing the reading had the irritating habit of putting a tonic stress on the end of every phrase: He had dark blond HAIR. His motorcar was BLACK. It was a sunny DAY.
It became monotonous.

Story is enjoyable but narrator not so much
Enjoyed the story and would listen to more in the series with a different narrator, but will probably just read the books as this narrator is not very good. Frequently uses the same inflections for every sentence, ignores obvious punctation making it difficult to follow the narration, and just generally sounds uninterested in what she is reading. I finished this book as I really like this author and her books but considered quitting part way through as the narrator was annoying me.

The reader makes or breaks an audio book
The reader has a cadence in her narrative that was the same no matter what was happening. It was very boring to listen to so didn’t finish.
