À propos de cet audio
Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice. It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of Savoyard still stand. Where a longstanding debt of blood has never been forgotten. A debt that has been waiting patiently for Frank Nichols' homecoming...

Andrew Ranulf Blankenship is a handsome, stylish nonconformist with wry wit, a classic Mustang, and a massive library. He is also a recovering alcoholic and a practicing warlock, able to speak with the dead through film. His house is a maze of sorcerous booby traps and escape tunnels, as yours might be if you were sitting on a treasury of Russian magic stolen from the Soviet Union thirty years ago.

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

Histoire
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Not what I expected
Found this book on a list of "best horror" stories. I was disappointed, it did not really feel like a horror at all especially compared to a number of other books on the list. The narrator did a fabulous job. I did find the story a bit drawn out and laggy at times. For the most part it was a good story and worth a listen. Wish it had been in the plus catalogue though, would have spent my credit on something else.

Would make a fantastic movie but…
The moment I found out it was boiled down to werewolves I was a bit let down. But the revenge brought me back. There’s nothing quite at delicious as revenge.
This would make a fantastic movie especially if it was early 2000’s or late 90s

Where wolf? There wolf.
Christopher Buehlman's first novel, which was actually the last of his novels I have read to date. I was pulled into Mr
Buehlman's sphere after reading recommendations for Between Two Fires (which I also highly recommend), and I chose to read several of his other novels first, based on reviews I had read. I actually had read a synopsis for Those Across the River, and wasn't sure if it would be for me. I essentially judged a book by its cover and while I don't regret reading his other novels, I think this book is one of his strongest.
His writing has a slow burn to it. The character and scene development is great. You don't see what's coming, even though you have a good idea of what to expect.
I won't spoil the plot, so enjoy!
