the story is well written, and the audiobook is well read, but the story itself, just so-so.

I first read the Gormenghast books 50 years ago, and liked them very much. I gave all of the characters voices in my head, which is something I think I do quite well. They were trash compared to the voices given in this audiobook. I very much like the book when I read it, and I absolutely loved listening to it.

both the book, and the narration, are superb. it isn't easy to get into it immediately, - at least it wasn't for me. but oh, how rewarding it is once you do! very unique, captivating book.

I have never before read a novel that itself is best described as *eccentric*. The characters surely are eccentric, but everything else about it is eccentric, too. I first tried to read this when I was around 12 years old and it took me about 30 more before I tried again. This second time around, I devoured it. A very odd, utterly captivating read (listen).

Brilliant story and brilliant performance. I read this many years ago and found it to be just as delightful and engaging now as it was then! Mervyn Peake is a true master of the English language and a wonderful story teller.
