À propos de cet audio
Leon Uris’s beloved Irish classic
From the acclaimed author who enthralled the world with Exodus, Battle Cry, QB VII, Topaz, and other beloved classics of twentieth-century fiction comes a sweeping and powerful epic adventure that captures the "terrible beauty" of Ireland during its long and bloody struggle for freedom. It is the electrifying story of an idealistic young Catholic rebel and the valiant and beautiful Protestant girl who defied her heritage to join his cause. It is a tale of love and danger, of triumph at an unthinkable cost - a magnificent portrait of a people divided by class, faith, and prejudice - an unforgettable saga of the fires that devastated a majestic land...and the unquenchable flames that burn in the human heart.

Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris’s Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author. This is the story of enlisted men - Marines at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough-and-ready tangle of guys from America’s cities and farms and reservations. Led by a tough veteran sergeant, these soldiers band together to emerge as part of one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. With staggering realism and detail we follow them into intense battles - Guadalcanal and Tarawa.

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

In nearly every moment of our waking lives, we face a barrage of advertising enticements, branding efforts, sponsored social media, commercials, and other efforts to harvest our attention. Over the last century, few times or spaces have remained uncultivated by the "attention merchants", contributing to the distracted, unfocused tenor of our times. Tim Wu argues that this is not simply the byproduct of recent inventions, but the end result of more than a century's growth and expansion in the industries that feed on human attention.

Histoire
It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy - and a time of transcendent courage and determination. Leon Uris’s blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists. Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling story of one of the most heroic struggles of modern times.

In the tradition of the spellbinding historical novels of Philippa Gregory and Kate Morton comes a stunning story based on a real-life Tudor mystery, of a curse that echoes through the centuries and shapes two women’s destinies....1560: Amy Robsart is trapped in a loveless marriage to Robert Dudley, a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Surrounded by enemies and with nowhere left to turn, Amy hatches a desperate scheme to escape - one with devastating consequences that will echo through the centuries.

Ce que les critiques en disent
"Leon Uris uses history as the raw material for legend in his powerful novel Trinity, a tale packed with romance and adventure." (Philadelphia Sunday Bulletin)
"The story has a kind of relentless power, based on the real tragedy of Ireland, and Uris’s achievement is that he has neither cheapened nor trivialized that tragedy." (New York Times Book Review)
"An honest Irish story, emotional, full of...tales of Irish heroes and fools, of God, fear and superstition, of love and hatred, poverty and greed." (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Tour de force of the Irish Troubles
I knew relatively little of Ireland and its political struggles between the Protestants and Catholics. No more. This epic novel covers about thirty years of a small group of Irish characters. From childhood and young adulthood until their mid-forties and beyond. The story is deep and broad and does a wonderful job of carefully delving into the culture and religion of the Catholics and Protestants while building up to the conflict that rages in the 20th century. This story takes place from the mid-1880s through to the end of WW1.
The main characters are developed magnificently. You care/loath about them all and at times, it feels as though you're right there in a quaint Irish village or urban slum. It's visceral.
The story is long, which is ok because you care about the characters and their lives. The narration is superb in every way. My one gripe is that the end of the book feels rushed. Major characters get short shrift, but when it did end, I was relieved because most of the storylines ended satisfactorily.
If you're interested in modern day Ireland in any way or just enjoy a compelling story, I highly recommend this listen.

The good, Bad and Ugly
I am afraid that this was the longest performance I have ever endured. I found at times it dragged on in a manner that caused the mind to wonder. Great story well presented but too drawn out.
Whew glad it’s done.
