À propos de cet audio

The New York Times best-selling author of The Sixth Extinction and Field Notes from a Catastrophe returns to humanity’s transformative impact on the environment in Under a White Sky.

That man should have dominion “over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” is a prophecy that has hardened into fact. So pervasive are human impacts on the planet that it’s said we live in a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene.

The question we now face is: Can we change nature, this time in order to save it? Elizabeth Kolbert, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction, takes a hard look at the new world we are creating. Along the way, she meets scientists who are trying to preserve the world’s rarest fish, which lives in a single, tiny pool in the middle of the Mojave; engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone in Iceland; Australian researchers who are trying to develop a “super coral” that can survive on a hotter globe; and physicists who are contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere to cool the earth.

One way to look at human civilization, says Kolbert, is as a 10,000-year exercise in defying nature. In The Sixth Extinction, she explored the ways in which our capacity for destruction has reshaped the natural world. Now she examines how the very sorts of interventions that have imperiled our planet are increasingly seen as the only hope for its salvation. By turns inspiring, terrifying, and darkly comic, Under a White Sky is an utterly original examination of the challenges we face.

Fascinating

After the first few chapters I felt as if I was listening to someone read a thesis - but well worth sticking with it. The author’s “wrap up” at the end was brilliant; I wish there had been something similar at the beginning to set the stage, to prepare the reader to “tag along “ w the author on her investigative travels and interviews. This book is a great contribution to public understanding of (or at least a glimpse) how science research works.

Not all doom and gloom

While I like to know the past, present and future "plans" for our planet, I don't want the information I receive to be all "gloom and doom". While I want the facts, I also like to have some hope when I'm done injestin' those facts and not to feel hollowed out and hopeless. Elizabeth Kolbert does an absolutely fabulous job of statin' the importance of her research. While allowin' me to feel like Humankind can still do some good and repair some of the damage caused by our arrogance in believin' we can control nature, she still manages to get the point across. I look forward to readin' her previous book, THE SIXTH EXTINCTION: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY and hope there are future books.

Captivay and thought provoking

I could hardly stop listening to this. It is so fascinating to hear all of these case studies. I was left both hopeful and disconcerted - though I think maybe that is the goal. It's beautifully written. The performance is also very well done. I strongly recommend this book.

Brilliant book

Instead of falling into mere generalities, Elizabeth Kolbert dived deep into a series of remarkable stories about humans trying to solve problems caused by humans who were trying to solve problems. The level details of details provided really allows you to form an informed opinion on the various topics covered. Very influential book for my understanding of where we fit as humans in the planet, how we are changing the ecosystems, and the options that are in front of us.

Painful Truth of Climate Crisis

Kolbert’s book skillfully lays out the past, present and future of the climate crisis using case histories and healthy doses of objective realism to bring the truth home. Lowman’s narration is excellent and flows nicely. Kolbert’s research and writing make for a powerful read. She includes examples of geo- engineering projects that may or may not make a difference. By the end you’ll have a very clear idea of what is at stake.
