À propos de cet audio

Katie LeClair has finally settled down as the new doctor in Baxter, Michigan. After years of moving, schooling, and training, she wants nothing more than to find a place she can call home, and a small town outside of Ann Arbor seems perfect.

Katie quickly gets to work in building a life for herself in Baxter, and beyond reviving her love life, she also finds a pair of business partners in a team of father and son family practitioners. But that idyllic dream is immediately shattered when one of her patients is found dead. That wouldn't be the worst thing, except the death is ruled a suicide, and as evidence has it, the suicide was a result of the medication Katie had prescribed. But she doesn't remember writing it.

When a closer investigation reveals it was murder, Katie is catapulted into an off-the-books investigation that leads her down a dark path of past secrets. But someone is willing to kill to keep part of the town's history in the shadows, and Katie must race to find out who before it's too late.

Realistic but Sophomoric

Speaking as a Physician, I can testify to the authenticity of Dawn Eastman's depiction of experiences & attitudes of health care providers - to the point that it's pretty obvious that she's intimately familiar with life as a mid-sized community doctor (in this case the mythical town of Baxter, Michigan). With that background well-established, Eastman tests her literary skills..
Unfortunately, despite capable vocabulary/prose, reasonably clever plotting, and passable dialogue & description, she writes painfully typecast characters ["Hollywood" versions of flawless allies (e.g. the computer-hacker brother; the ebullient BFF), ruggedly handsome 'Dr. McDreamy' romantic interests, perpetually anxious hypochondriacal patients, cartoonishly sketchy suspects, and the obligatory dedicated, folksy sheriff]. This book has an overwhelming amateurish feel.

The narration from Amanda Nolan doesn't help much (it isn't terrible, but it's distinctly subpar). Her diction, cadence, and tone are quite commendable - and her voice-acting is actually quite praiseworthy - but she reads at a *plodding* rate (setting playback at 1.20X is necessary to render this recording tolerable), with an annoying nasal timbre, and with frequently noisy intakes of breath. All in all: a professional effort that falls short.

Altogether, this reasonably entertaining mystery feels like a "first effort" from a doctor or medical student. 'Unnatural Causes' rates 5 stars out of 10 (a reasonable selection if you can get it as a free 'Plus' option.. but not worth a Credit if they ask).

Enjoyed, very much.

I enjoyed the story line as it had many twists and turns. The narrator has a very nice voice and it was pleasure listening.

Just okay

The premise behind this book was okay, I had an inkling of the killer's identity but wasn't positive. The narration was fairly lacklustre. If these weren't part of the Plus catalogue I probably wouldn't bother with the next, but since it's a free listen I'll continue.
All in all this rates a "meh".

boring

pretty predictable story and ending. I struggled to pay attention. too many characters whose names I kept forgetting which made it hard to follow.
