Description

Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.

Too much bone, not enough meat.....

I was very impressed with the narrator. She was absolutely wonderful. Her French was very good, her portrayals of characters was dead on. \wonderful job!
The story was long and at many points too preachy. It could have done with much less dreariness. Some chapters were a good read, towards the end less story and more religious and lecturing. I enjoyed the story parts, not so much the lecturing. This author seems to find joy in ending her book on an unfinished note. It would have given joy to end on either happy or unhappy note. Does Lucy find happiness with Paul, or does she continue to spend her life alone and lonely? After having lived her life with her, I prefer her to finally find happiness with Paul in the cozy little home he provided for her. It is depressing to let the mind drift to his unfortunate demise at sea after a horrible storm. Miss Lucy deserves some love.
Compared to Jane Eyre, this one doestnt match up.
