Enough tropes to feel comfortable, but plenty of new twists to keep things interesting.
I found the characters showed some depth and were all interesting and unique. The setting and magic system were introduced quickly, but understanding came pretty quickly without it being spoon fed.
The narrator was excellent and kept me invested throughout.
The only thing I had a bit of a hard time with was understanding all of the different races, bloodline originators and other setting specific nouns. I'm sure these will come as I listen more.
Looking forward to book 2!
