Wes Anderson is a distinctive auteur of modern American cinema, known for having created a personal universe out of pastel colour palettes, meticulous set design, nostalgic soundtracks and a troupe of familiar actors – all seen in films such as Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs.
In this pocket guide Sophie Monks Kaufman delves beneath Anderson’s pristine surfaces to examine his emotional preoccupations with family, romance, failure, adventure and death. She carefully unspools the cultural threads that inform his aesthetic to explain why this precocious arthouse film nerd from Texas has become one of the most popular directors of his generation.

Like A Love Letter From A Fangirl
On average, I think the films of Wes Anderson are very well done. Some are astounding in visual tone but some are bland. Some are extremely well paced but some are plodding and slow burning. Sometimes the dialogue is well-honed but then there are times where it drags. Some of his films put me to sleep and some keep me watching and wanting more. With each new film, he seems to have grabbed on to a new trick or a new style and that is wonderful to behold, especially when you take a random sampling of his 9 projects, soon to be 10. For reasons that defy American filmmaking method, he has complete control over his pictures and maintains his auteur status even if his films don't make any money. He seems content to make films first for himself and then anyone who cares to watch. By now, he has achieved cult status. But I wouldn't have thought he'd have a fangirl admirer.
This is very well-researched, long-form essay on the career and output of Wes Anderson. If one were at all curious about what makes Wes Anderson tick and what his motivations are, one need only give a listen to this exhaustive article. It gets a bit personal at the end with the author relating a breathless story of an almost face to face with Mr. Anderson. I could have done without that. It splashes a bit of "crazy ex-girlfriend" stain on the piece which muddies the good intentions.
It was a breezy, informative piece that I took along with me for my daily lockdown walks. I wish I could order up more audiobooks like this about other filmmakers I admire.
