Description

Frustrating Main Character

It is rare for me to have a strong dislike for the protagonist of a novel. It seemed like Vivienne was determined to make the wrong decisions for her life. Like why was she so determined to marry Edmund when he was so obviously the wrong choice for her? This story alternates between her life in World War One and World War Two. Vivienne's choices weren't all bad. Her decision to be an ambulance driver in the First War was an admirable one. I also was quite impressed with her decision to take in a Jewish girl who was evacuated from London during the Second War. That was a life changing decision, one which I believe made her into a better person. Despite my frustrations with Vivienne, I did enjoy her story. It shows the reader the complications of human relationships especially when amplified by the horrors and challenges of war.
