Mary McAuliffe traces a decade that saw seismic change on almost every front, from art and architecture to music, literature, fashion, entertainment, transportation, and, most notably, behavior. The epicenter of all this creativity, as well as of the era's good times, was Montparnasse, where impoverished artists and writers found colleagues and cafes, and tourists discovered the Paris of their dreams. Major figures on the Paris scene - such as Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, Picasso, Stravinsky, Diaghilev, and Proust - continued to hold sway, while others now came to prominence - including Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, Cole Porter, and Josephine Baker, as well as Andre Citroën, Le Corbusier, Man Ray, Sylvia Beach, James Joyce, and the irrepressible Kiki of Montparnasse.

If you love the era…
This was really good and informative but it included a lot subjects I didn’t care about. It was really well researched which is obvious. If you love the Era over all you may find it fascinating or you be bored. It’s just one of those books. Please note that even though I was overwhelmed and liked it, you may not. Listen to the Sample first.

Outstanding!
Great history of the world of the impressionists, surrealists, cubists - the artists, their loves and dealers - alongside the writers, Hemingway, Joyce, in cafes and at Shakespeare and Company - with the designers, the playwrights, the dado-ists, and everyone else in Paris. The city really did sizzle at this time. Exceptionally well researched and written, I was interested to learn this author has written about other Paris eras as well, so I plan to read those too.
