À propos de cet audio

In WHEN WE WERE BRAVE, we find a conflicted SS officer, Wilhelm Falk, who risks everything to escape the Wehrmacht and get out the message about the death camps. Izaak is a young Jewish boy whose positive outlook is challenged daily as each new perilous situation comes along. American citizens, Herbert Müller, and his family, are sent back to the hellish landscape of Germany because of the DNA coursing through their veins. In the panorama of World War II, these are the high-stakes plots and endearing characters whose braided fates we pray will work out in the end.

Heartbreaking

This book is about four families touched by World War II. Three in Europe, one in the United States. William Faulks was an SS officer who discovered the truth about what was happening in the camps and set about trying to get word out to the Allies in the hopes of stopping the atrocities. Herbert Mueller was an American farmer of German descent who was detained at Ellis Island with his family and repatriated to Germany towards the end of the war. Pastor Graf was a friend of Faulks who had immigrated to the States and was also repatriated back to Germany and met Mueller and his family at Ellis Island. And Isaac Talbot was a young child from Amsterdam whose father was taken to one of the camps, and he and his mother hidden, until they too were taken to the camps.

I held out hope that this book would have a somewhat happy ending, as happy as a book about death camps and prisoners could be, and I suppose the end in happy, but it was also heartbreaking.

This is a well-written, well narrated book. Hard to listen to at times, but a testament to those that endured that period of history and were brave.
