A "remarkable" (Los Angeles Times), "seductive" (The Wall Street Journal) debut from the new cohost of Radiolab, Why Fish Don’t Exist is a dark and astonishing tale of love, chaos, scientific obsession, and - possibly - even murder.

"At one point, Miller dives into the ocean into a school of fish...comes up for air, and realizes she’s in love. That’s how I felt: Her book took me to strange depths I never imagined, and I was smitten." (The New York Times Book Review)

David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. But the more of the hidden blueprint of life he uncovered, the harder the universe seemed to try to thwart him. His specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake - which sent more than 1,000 discoveries, housed in fragile glass jars, plummeting to the floor. In an instant, his life’s work was shattered.

Many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation that he believed would at last protect his work against the chaos of the world.

When NPR reporter Lulu Miller first heard this anecdote in passing, she took Jordan for a fool - a cautionary tale in hubris, or denial. But as her own life slowly unraveled, she began to wonder about him. Perhaps instead he was a model for how to go on when all seemed lost. What she would unearth about his life would transform her understanding of history, morality, and the world beneath her feet.

Part biography, part memoir, part scientific adventure, Why Fish Don’t Exist is a wondrous fable about how to persevere in a world where chaos will always prevail.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Lulu Miller's friendly, curious voice braids together history, biography, and memoir. The former host of the NPR podcast 'Invisibilia' introduces listeners to taxonomist and former Stanford president David Starr Jordan, famous for his work classifying fish. Initially, Miller is inspired by Jordan because he personifies resilience after his life's work seems to have been destroyed by an earthquake. But she also uncovers his darker side while researching. Miller has a slightly husky down-to-earth voice, and her storytelling background in radio infuses her work. Her confident delivery is playful and comfortably paced, her narration engaging and easy on the ear. When Miller deals with subjects like depression and loss in her own life, it's especially meaningful knowing she's experienced the stories and insights she shares.” (AudioFile magazine)

"What a delightful book.... Ms. Miller wields [Radiolab’s] familiar format with panache, spinning a tale so seductive that I read her book in one sitting." (The Wall Street Journal)

"I want to live at this book’s address: the intersection of history and biology and wonder and failure and sheer human stubbornness. What a sumptuous, surprising, dark delight." (Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties)

Fish?

This was an amazing read, I would recommend this book if you’re interested in psychology or science.

twisty ride through history

part autobiography, part search for answers, part brain shifting truth, but the biggest part is another scientists biography. It is a dark and twisty ride through the late 1800s right up to modern day scientific theory.

I am rating the performance a 5/5 (with the author narrating her own book, how can you disagree with her presentation — but I do think she is great), and the "story" also 5/5. But with the title what it is, you literally don't get to that part of the book until the last chapter, and then the epilogue. So it is for that reason that I am rating the overall score 4/5.

The poisoning of Mrs. Standford was weird, and then the eugenics portion was hard to listen to. Especially with Anna's segment being so personal. But I get why they were necessary along the way to get to the end of this book. I just can't reconcile in my brain the expectations that I had based on the title, and how this book was referred to me (the final two chapters). Great/tough book to listen too altogether though!

Highly recommend to lovers of science, history and the human condition

I first listed to Lulu Miller on her podcast invisibilia, so when I saw that she had narrated her own book I was exited to hear it! Lulu delivers a beautiful heartfelt performance and I loved the combination of science, biography, history, speculation and interpretation of her findings. I enjoyed that she expressed how her own curiosities and life challenges filed her research. I found this book to be highly relatable, fascinating and at times absolutely devastating.

Well worth your time

I
A little slow to start and initially some of the writing was annoying, however as the book progressed the writing felt more confident and less self conscious. I ended up being fascinated with the story threads, and loved the book. I could have hugged Lulu by the end who shared her own personal journey. I shall try to take to heart the wisdom she found and shares. Her epilogue, with the special add on for the audio book listeners was wonderful. Thank you Lulu.

A rupture of warmth and hope in these bleak, covid times. Absolutely incredible work of nonfiction.

What a journey!

I have been on many audio journeys with Lulu Miller over the years (through Radiolab, Invisibilia, Where There's Smoke, and other sources). This latest journey of Why Fish Don’t Exist was the longest - literally and perhaps figuratively. It had many twist and turns, and insights and intrigues. The book is just beautifully beautifully written. And, of course, masterfully delivered by Miller here.

There is no way this book is what you think it is. Which is sort of calling card for Lulu, I think. She has a way of finding the story behind the story, and inside the story, and hiding behind the story.

I loved the entire book, but feel I must highlight how strongly it concludes. The penultimate chapter, Dandelions. Wow. This chapter alone … such a journey. To first feel fury and deep sorrow and helplessness, and then have it turn into a view of beauty and love and hope. A chapter that will resonate with me for a lifetime. And then a final chapter that binds the book together. And a personal Epilogue that binds the experience together. Just perfect and wonderful.

I highly recommend Why Fish Don’t Exist. I am certain that the journey will engage you, and believe the experience will change you.

LISTEN

Literally the best audiobook in the history of audiobooks. Heartwarming and hopeful while being completely honest about not knowing about what to do and think in this world.
