From the New York Times best-selling author of the National Book Award-winning title The Poet X comes a dazzling novel in prose about a girl with talent, pride, and a drive to feed the soul that keeps her fire burning bright.

Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.

Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions - doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness.

Even though she dreams of working as a chef after she graduates, Emoni knows that it’s not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she thinks she has to play by, once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Author Elizabeth Acevedo sounds natural and authentic as Emoni, an immensely likable Philadelphia high school senior with a 2-year-old daughter and a gift for cooking. In both her writing and her narration, Acevedo warmly depicts the loving and supportive people in Emoni's life.... This delicious feel-good story will have listeners rooting for Emoni as she figures out the next steps on her life path." (AudioFile Magazine)

Normally I don't write reviews but I'm going through a mini journey of rediscovering what is to be latinx now days and trying to gain a new appreciation for latinx art and this is a great place to get started. This book is the literature equivalent of getting a big hug and a warm meal at your abuelita's table. It puts into words the latinx relationship with food which sometime I have a hard time explaining. In addition of touching on more serious themes. If you liked the brief wondrous life of Oscar wao then you will probably like this book. Some tears came down while reading this and I had to stop everything to finish listening to it. Just amazing all around.

amazing!!!

that's what the words and the performance amount to. it was lyrical. Her tone and accent while she read this ....I could listen to Miss Acevedo read the dictionary and love it.
i haven't read any of her previous works, but her word choice and phrasing lets me know she's a poet...and a good one at that. Li⁰stening to her read her own words gave me poetry slam vibes even though there was not one traditional poem in the book.
Regardless to say I loved it

it was lyrical

I had this as a book club book and I struggled to get through it. It's overwhelmingly predictable. None of the challenges feel real. It's just a boring plod from one easy victory to another, and the challenges that are foreshadowed don't even come to be.

There's a lot of poetry in the language, and Acevado's reading voice is clear and pleasant to listen to.

What a waste of time
