Joe's body is failing him. In order to make his last weeks of life more palatable, he goes into full digital immersion. This new process will allow him to play in a virtual environment with a fake but healthy and strong virtual body. As soon as he steps into this new environment he meets his virtual assistant, an Evolving Intelligence (E.I.), who takes the form of someone close to him and goes by the name Spooky. After explaining how the game will function, she gives him his first items.

Before Joe and Spooky can begin playing the game, they are both summoned to a reality where magic is real. Due to the coincidental timing of this event, Joe believes this is all just part of the digital immersion. He is unaware that the summoning has healed his real body, making him now truly young and powerful. As he still believes that he's dying, he lives every moment to the fullest, unaware that he is now a near immortal. What will happen to his assistant, the E.I., once placed in this new reality? Will they survive their new environment or will the myriad of dangers swallow them up?

very slow

I enjoy the concept of the book but the progress is so slow. The whole first book was just one day worth of activity..

Unremarkable LitRPG

Obviously neurodivergent (Asperger?) assistant neurobiologist/Stay-at-home Dad Kip Terrington offers a workable entry in the genre:
• Likable, relatable snarky/irreverent MC with impeccable morals? Check.
• Plausible reason to enter a VR Game-structured Universe? Check.
• Workable Gameplay mechanics? Check.
• Metagame Notifications (Quest offers, XP Awards, etc.)? Check.
• Character Sheet updates and Point assignments? Check.
• Quasi-humorous observations and pop-culture references (heavy on nerdy topics like LOTR lore and Monty Python sketches)? Check.
• In-game action? Check (+/-).

Terrington provides a well-planned and well-executed story about a physically broken down elderly army veteran IRL ("Joe") dropped into an achievement-reward reality in an adaptive cyborg-like "Man-Machine" body - accompanied by an AI guide ("Spooky Joy") that reminds Joe of his dead wife and explains how the world works as they progress.
Unfortunately, no writing awards await this author (he isn't terribly talented), the worldbuilding, mechanics, and gameplay are unreasonably cerebral/philosophical & autistic-level meticulous.. and the combat & encounter scripting is unimpressive. If you decide to try this audiobook, don't expect to be blown away.

An "adequate" reading performance from J.D. Jackson contributes to my generally unfavorable rating, too. To be certain, Jackson is commendable with regards to diction, timbre, and cadence.. but he reads too slowly (setting playback speed at 1.20X yields the most natural pacing), a couple of pronunciations are suspect, and he often sounds as though he's reading a book sitting open on his lap. Tantor Audio Inc. could have cast this project better.

Altogether, 'You're Not Allowed To Die' merits a disappointing 4 stars out of 10. If you can get it as a free 'Plus' selection, it's not a crazy waste of time, I guess.. but save your Credit for something else if they ask for one.

[Incidentally: Joe's comic relief Goblin companions - flicking boogers at each other - are legitimately groanworthy]
