20: SETH BUTLER: Use Storytelling to Create Inclusive Communities

  • Résumé

  • Seth’s journey into higher education, Diversity and Inclusion, and public speaking began as an elite Division-I athlete at Colorado State University where he served in several leadership roles, mentored youth at risk, earned leadership awards, and sought to provide service opportunities for the student athlete population. After finishing his athletic career and earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Seth went on to earn his Master of Science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education also from Colorado State University. After beginning his career in higher education within the career services functional area, Seth co-founded B&B Career Consulting in 2018 which serves clients by helping them transition into their next career step through resume writing, career coaching, and interview preparation. B&B serves clients both nationally and internationally. Since the launch of the company, Seth has pursued opportunities to lead conversations around racial justice and has been successful in influencing others to engage in meaningful conversations. Seth served as the Director of Intercultural Student Services at the University of Findlay where he led initiatives focused on diversity, inclusion, and belonging. He has a passion for creating environments of unity and harmony by cultivating value and appreciation of human difference. Seth facilitated conversations with the goal of helping others grow in their understanding of race relations in our society and he also uses poetry in his various platforms to spark conversations about the intersection of faith and racial justice. Now self-employed as an independent contractor, public speaker and spoken word artist, Seth uses his gifts and passions to motivate others to build deep relationships, grow in humility, and cultivate their faith. As a public speaker and performer, Seth has been invited to speak at various conferences and events ranging across multiple industries including athletic venues, religious-based events, healthcare, non-profit, academia, and the private sector. Seth has been selected to be a featured TEDx speaker and invited to perform last year at the Mayo Clinic RISE for Equity conference. Seth resides in Findlay, Ohio with his Wife Hannah and three daughters, Leah (5), Norah (3), and Ella (7 months). As a husband, father, and follower of Jesus, Seth strives to positively influence others by living by his motto “Growth & Grace—We all need to grow, but we all need grace.”

In this episode, we talk with Seth about how storytelling can help us relationally, to better understand and connect with people who think differently so that we can build inclusive communities.
