There’s Still Time for Love to Save Us

“Rend your heart and not your garments.

Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.” - Joel 2:13

The prophet Joel warned the people of his day of the pending calamity they would suffer if they continued down the road they were following.

The same type of warning applies to many of us today, and it certainly applies to all of us collectively as humanity. Our lack of care for the world around us, our lack of care for each other, will lead us to more hardship and suffering.

But even in the midst of this dire warning, there was yet a seed of hope. If we sincerely have a change of heart that leads us to changing the way we treat each other and the way we live, there’s still time for us to advert these disasters.

There’s still time for love to save us.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.” - from Matthew 6:1

If we are practicing our religion and spirituality in order to look good or to win the respect of others, then we are doing it for the wrong reasons.

Alternatively, Jesus shows us a spirituality where our prayer simply becomes our way of life.

    Our Father in heaven,

    hallowed be your name,

(Live life with awe, wonder and trust.)

    your kingdom come,

    your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

(Never give up the hope the world as it should be.)

Give us today our daily bread.

(Stay centered and focused in the needs of the moment.)

    And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

    (Practice Forgiveness)

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil.

(Always seek to be in the right places, doing the right things, for the right reasons)

This kind of righteousness doesn’t need the affirmation of anyone.

Let’s Give Up Injustice for Lent

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?

Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness[a] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

    Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”

    Isaiah 58:5-12
