    How Change Comes

“Perseverance is not a long race; it’s many short races one after the other.” – Walter Elliot

When looking at the problems we face, it’s easy to become overwhelmed like the children at the end of the book “Cat in the Hat”

We feel like the mess around us is ‘so deep, and so wide, and so far and so tall, there’s no way we can clean at all.’ And we end up giving up.

I often felt that way serving in a poor community in Jackson, Mississippi. The disparities in access to healthcare, nutrition, education, transportation and even at times drinking water.

But coming together with other good people working together across race, class, religion and partisan politics, with organizations such as Working Together Jackson and Working Together Mississippi we were able to make incremental change.

We picked one small part of the problem, worked on it, and then worked on the next, in succession. Together we expanded healthcare access for women and children, fixed some of the roads, saw a failing school district improve and took down the Confederate Flag.

Not all at once, but one after another continuously striving, persevering through setbacks and disappointment.

    That’s how change comes.
