AI in the Environment: Why new tech gains should be applied to biodiversity loss

  • Résumé

  • When a machine can perform tasks that normally require humans, and potentially mimic or surpass them, this can be referred to as “artificial” intelligence. But when human ingenuity is applied to AI, it opens up a world of possibilities. This is currently evident in degrading ecosystems, climate change, food insecurity and a pandemic, to name a few. Unfortunately, not enough of this technological advancement is being applied to Biodiversity loss. Dr. Graham Taylor is a Professor and Canada Research Chair of Machine Learning at the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph, Research Director at the Vector Institute and Canada CIFAR AI Chair. He talks about the importance of protecting biological diversity, pushing boundaries with AI, and driving future behaviours to improve life.
