Thirty-five years ago, Impact 89FM officially signed on to the FM airwaves for the first time. On this inaugural episode of Behind the Mics, host Tessa Kresch talks with the team of students who were there that night to kick off a new era of radio at Michigan State University: Kevin Curnow, Dawn Paepke, Jim Tarladgis, Steve Simonson, Scott Kunnath and Laura (Valasco) Curnow. Founding general manager Gary Reid joins Tessa for the conversation, which includes audio highlights from the actual first hour of programming.

This year, Impact 89FM celebrates 35 years broadcasting from Michigan State University. What better time than now to take a look back? On this podcast series, we'll be talking with DJs, directors, show hosts, and everyone in between who made the station what it is today. And, we need to remember that student radio at MSU goes back even further than the start of the Impact itself in 1989. Along the way, we'll be exploring student radio's origins from the small carrier current stations that operated within residence halls across MSU's campus, to their combination into the campus-wide Michigan State Network, and finally leading to the consolidation around Impact 89FM. Our guests will also share stories about their careers and insights they took away from their time on the radio. So join us, as we talk with alums and get their stories - Behind the Mics. It's a new podcast series from Impact 89FM.
