Bestest Picture

Auteur(s): Darren Shaw
  • Résumé

  • The Shaw family is on an epic quest to find out which of the Oscar Best Picture winners stands above them all. They’re watching every Academy Award Best Picture Winning film; each episode features two films that share a common thread, pitted against one another in single-elimination. The winner advances to the next round; the loser goes home. It’s a Battle Royale; it’s a Tournament of Champions; it’s March Madness… but with movies. Join Darren, Kendall, Sam, and Ben Shaw (and the occasional special guest) as they get together to talk about what they’ve seen, share some fun film facts, and posit all their opinions - whether educated or completely unfounded. By the time it’s all through, there will be a winner (obviously, There can Only be One): The One Film to Rule them All. The Best of the Best. The Bestest Picture.

  • Cimarron (1931) vs. Dances with Wolves (1991)
    Feb 1 2025

It’s a New Year, and we’re back in the saddle again! That’s right, Episode 5 is all about WESTERNS (which, incidentally, is one of the top 7 genres of film).

Join Darren and Kendall as they dive into the first - and second - westerns to win Best Picture: CIMARRON (1931) and DANCES WITH WOLVES (1991).

When you put them together, these two films have it ALL - the Good, the Bad, and the Problematically Ugly. And the Shaws are going to get into every bit of it, plus some additional stuff: movie recommendations, family trip anecdotes, NEXT-LEVEL literary criticism and genre study, and encouragement for students to use more wikipedia.

So get on them spurs, don your hat, and mount up! (it means, “get on your horses”) as THE BESTEST PICTURE PODCAST RIDES AGAIN! -------------

  • Platoon (1987) vs The Deer Hunter (1979)
    Dec 25 2024

It’s CHRISTMAS! And what could get us into the spirit of a jolly holiday season better than two gritty, somber, and heavy Vietnam War epics?

Yes, for some reason we can’t quite explain, it’s a Bestest Picture Christmas where Darren, Sam, and Ben talk about Platoon (1987) and The Deer Hunter (1979). We’ll also introduce a completely original and totally unique game to the show called “To Be (a Fact) or Not to Be (a True Fact)."

So grab your cup of cocoa or wassail, get someplace cozy, and join us. And remember... You can’t spell “Nativity Time” without v, i,e,t,n,a, or m.

Merry Christmas and Happy To It! -------------

  • An American in Paris (1951) vs Gigi (1958)
    Dec 2 2024
In the 1950’s TWO musicals took home the Oscar for Best Picture, and Darren, Kendall, and Sam are having them face off in Episode 3! Of course, we’re talking about "An American in Paris" and "Gigi.” And they’ve got a LOT in common: Both musicals, both set in Paris, both starring Leslie Caron and directed by Vincente Minelli. We’ve got music, we’ve got Paris, we've got opinions... who could ask for anything more?!? ------------- - Subscribe to the Show and Leave a Review or a Rating! - Follow the Show on Facebook and Instagram - Email Us! bestestpicturepod@gmail.com
