The movie kicks off with Read Along Michelle. She runs a YouTube channel where she reads books. She’s a big dreamer and definitely a glass-half-full type of person. Her sister, Keri, is struggling right now and is going to lose her house come February. Michelle is looking for ideas and gets inspired when she comes across the story of a kid who traded a rubber band for a house over the course of two years. She shares it with her sister, and Keri’s like, “I don’t have two years.” Michelle is like, “I can do it by Christmas!” Keri’s like, “Knock yourself out. Good luck out there.”

Michelle decides to start with a stocking instead of a rubber band. She posts about it online, signing it as Trading Up Christmas.

A struggling journalist named Dan finds out about Trading Up Christmas and wants to write an article about it. So he reaches out, but Michelle says she’s not interested in free press. Who would be? Not us, that’s for sure.

So, Dan decides to trick her into meeting by contacting her about a trade, which she accepts. He pitches the article one more time. But she ain’t having it. Until she is.

They begin to work together to trade up. Dan becomes very invested. They trade a sweater for an eggnog-tasting certificate, eggnog for a wreath, wreath for a crazy animatronic Santa, and then the big one… Santa for a snowmobile! Snowmobile for a trip to Hawaii. Things are going great. And the sparks are flying between Michelle and Dan.

Then they get the BIG trade – the trip for an RV. And you can trade an RV for a house.

Dan has a brother, Jack, who is a very successful real estate agent, and he finds a house that may be up for trade.

But things start to go wrong. The house falls through, and then Dan’s editor decides to publish names and pictures of Michelle and her sister, even though Dan promised they’d stay anonymous.

Dan and his brother find another house, and they make the trade happen, thanks to their dad also getting in on the action and trading his new sailboat.

They surprise Michelle with the house, and then Dan tells her how he feels. They kisssss.

So it's 1998, and Regina is by herself, desperate for her kids to come visit. Luckily, her friend comes by just in time to see the sink explode, so she calls a handyman.
In 1960, Eli and Penny are getting ready for Christmas. Eli is very stressed because his dad is staying with them, and he's less than thrilled, though he freaking looks great. Eli is the author of a bestselling book, but his dad is not impressed. Eli's son just wants him to help finish the time capsule.
Then in 2015, Jessie is helping her sister plan her big Christmas wedding. Beth is getting nervous, though, and it keeps getting worse. Her fiancé calls and says the business that was handling everything just went out of business. But Jessie is confident: "We can definitely do this!" Then the bad news keeps coming. Jessie's ex-boyfriend Tim is the officiant, and the wedding is going to take place in her backyard.
So Regina's whole thing is that the handyman shows up and just kind of sticks around. It's Nelson, her future husband, but for now he's just the handyman who is sticking around. However, he doesn't know anything about pipes, which is a problem.
Eli and his son are working on the time capsule, but Eli's dad is very grumpy about it.
And Jessie and Tim just kind of have to keep being around each other.
Ultimately, everything works out. Eli and his dad have a heart-to-heart, and they finish the capsule and bury it in a titanium box.
That box is what led to the tree root hitting the pipe that burst in 1998. They end up finding the box and open it up and yay for them.
And Jessie and Tim had their one and only date locked in the school gym in 1998. In 2015, they finally make up, and the wedding is great. They end up kissing, and everyone has a happy ending.

Abby Marshall is a famous actor on a show called Guiding Grace. She seems to really resent her character, Gabriella, because everyone only knows her as that role. The show has been canceled, and Abby’s ex-husband—who also played her husband on Guiding Grace—is getting married and expecting a baby. She's shocked because she thought he didn’t want kids.

Right after this, she loses it on a store clerk who keeps calling her "Gabriella" and refuses to be understanding about an ornament situation. This causes quite a crowd to form, including many people recording the incident. It goes viral, painting her in a bad light.

Abby decides she just wants to leave LA, so she quickly books a room at a resort. But there’s a mix-up with the booking... the mix-up being that Abby booked the wrong year. The concierge suggests a B&B nearby that has one room available.

So, she shows up and it’s immediately not what she was expecting. The guy running the B&B, Nick, is very awkward because he recognizes her. He explains that his late wife was a huge fan of hers.

The townspeople are buzzing that Abby is staying there—not because they like her, but because she just went viral for being a DIVAAAAAA.

Abby ends up helping with the town Christmas pageant that Nick is directing. His wife used to direct it before she passed, and he’s keeping her legacy alive. Nick’s daughter is even in the play and is cute as can be.

There are some prayers and mentions of God, just to remind us that this is a Dayspring movie.

Zoey is Nick’s sister-in-law, and she’s very concerned about Nick being into Abby and about Abby hanging out with him. Nick’s like, “Shove off. It’s fine.”

Nick and Abby have a romantic evening together, including a carriage ride through the woods, some hot chocolate, and some star-gazing. What’s not to love?

It’s the final dress rehearsal, and Abby is in her element. She was born to direct!

There's a Christmas masquerade ball (because that’s something that definitely happens somewhere, right?). Abby tries to stay anonymous but is called out by a rude townsperson named Mia. Abby stands up for herself—this time, it isn’t recorded. Nick and Abby slow dance to a Jennifer Hudson song. Abby tells Nick that she’s having such a good time and wants to stay through the New Year. She has to go back to LA for filming after that.

They try to end the night with a kiss, but they’re interrupted THREE separate times! First, Oliver calls Abby to tell her she needs to come in for a screen test. The network is nervous about all the bad press. Abby doesn’t want to let the kids down and leave immediately, but her career is on the line.

The media is tipped off, and they show up at the pageant for charity. Nick and Zoey misunderstand and think Abby tipped off the press. Nick is confused about whether Abby is his friend or just using him for good publicity.

The pageant goes off without a hitch. The kid forgets her lines, and Abby jumps on stage to help her “remember them.” She does so without stealing the spotlight.

Abby wants to stop playing the perfect wife and mom and instead BE an everyday wife and mom. Abby and Nick kiss as the star shines in the night sky.

Tory is still single, much to her Bubby’s chagrin. Tory explains she’s just too busy right now, trying to make partner. Speaking of which, she rushes out of Bubby’s breakfast to make it to work. She’s swamped and ends up falling asleep at her desk. But all this work may be for naught. The company is going to experience some layoffs due to a merger, and it doesn’t take long for her to get the boot.

Cut to Rocky’s bar. We meet Sam and his grandson, Jay. Jay is here on a mission—convince Sam to move closer to his family. When the regulars at the bar find out, they’re very mad. Sam is an institution! But Sam also recently fell, though he insists he’s fine.

Tory talks to her parents but can’t quite bear to tell them she was fired. She goes to visit her sister, and apparently it’s been a while because her nephew doesn’t even recognize her.

The next day, both Tory and Jay end up at the store to pick up some Hanukkah candles. There’s only one pack left, and they argue a bit. Ultimately, Jay ends up with them.

As she leaves the store, Tory sees Jay walking into Rocky’s. She follows him in, and walks out with a bartending job. Sam is pumped because he likes talking to her and calls her the granddaughter he never had.

Sam loves Rocky’s. It was a special spot for him and his late wife, and he insists on celebrating the first night of Hanukkah inside Rocky’s.

Jay and Tory end up spending more time together and start enjoying each other's company.

Rocky’s begins to become the go-to spot for Hanukkah, and the pair is thriving. Everything is going great, except for when Tory’s parents surprise her by showing up in the city.

It’s clear the sparks are flying between Jay and Tory, but he’s only here for two weeks. Jay starts to realize that this place, and this community Sam has built, is pretty wonderful.

Turns out, Sam owns the bar and the entire building—but no one knows. He wants to leave it all to Jay and wants Tory to help make that happen legally.

The word finally gets out that Tory was fired, and her mom cries. It’s the first time I’ve been on the side of someone lying.

Then, word gets out that Sam owns the building when someone comes in to make an offer on it. Jay gets mad that Tory kept this from him, so Sam pulls them both aside, sets the record straight, and tells Jay to get over it.

Sam tells Tory he wants to move here, and we get a TRIPLE almost kiss moment. They head downstairs to celebrate another night and share a big kiss after lighting the menorah.

Kate reluctantly works at her family's business, North Star, a year-round operation that trains Mall Santas nationwide. Despite its festive name, it’s a big commitment that's made her a bit grumpy about Christmas. When her dad decides to step away, Kate steps in, but the business is a mess. Her sister, Bailey, agrees to help her out.

Her rival and top instructor, Dan, works for a different Santa school. This school wins the Christmas Cup every year. After Dan gets fired for making too much money, he approaches Kate—despite their awkward past (they once went on a date, or a "scheduled gathering," if you will). He wants to join forces and win the Christmas Cup. She can't say no to that.

They carpool on the first day and have to screech to a halt when a Santa walks in front of them in the road. He's very confused. He doesn’t know his name or what he's doing. It’s at this point that they see Santa's reindeer and sleigh fly away. Is he the real deal?! They decide to bring him to the school so they can keep an eye on him.

They get to the school, and Dan is immediately concerned. It's a real ragtag group: an older fellow who just wants to be Santa for his grandkids, a woman who wants to prove she can do anything she puts her mind to, a ventriloquist and his dummy, some actor named Paul Campbell, and then there’s Nick...who has a giant bowl of cookies and just downs some milk.

The Santas begin to train, participating in obstacle courses and learning how to properly "ho-ho-ho." Santa Nick begins to have weird memory flashes whenever he touches someone but doesn’t know how to make heads or tails of it.

The next test is a big one—they have to actually deal with kids at the mall, and it’s intense for all of them...except Santa Nick. He crushes it. He knows what all the kids want. But he also sees what Kate’s dad’s friend, Ned, wants—he wants to buy the school. So Kate has a conversation with him, and she’s strongly considering his offer.

There’s a gift exchange, and Kate gives Dan a nice gift—a Christmas sweater that says he's the "Best Santa Trainer," so obviously, she’s into him. He asks her on a date, and she agrees. And what better way to go on a date than by crashing a Christmas party? They have an absolute blast together. They get kicked out, and that leads to them making out... The next morning, they make out some more... AY AY AY!!!!

Word gets out to Kate’s sister and the other Santas that Nick is the real Santa. It's almost Christmas Eve, and Nick still hasn’t regained his memories. Kate decides to try something—she shows Nick his Santa sack. He begins to go through it, and he gets a reindeer whistle and calls for his sleigh to come back.

Dan finds out that Kate is considering selling the school, and that bums him out. He assumes that also means she doesn’t see a future with him, so he decides it’s best if he just leaves.

It's time for the Christmas Cup. It ends in a tie. It comes down to sudden death. First person to beat the obstacle course wins! They draw names, and it's Nick's turn to go. Just then, Nick’s wife shows up. Turns out his name is Kris, and she is Mrs. Claus! The whistle told her where he was. She reminds him who he is. He goes to do the obstacle course, and he's behind the whole time until they get to the chimney climb. Somehow, almost like magic, Nick/Kris appears at the top of the chimney and rings the bell.

After the win, Kate decides not to sell the school. Santa gives her tickets to Paris and tells her that she still needs to live her life. Kate and Dan make up, and they kiss... They all head back to her place to celebrate, and the doorbell rings. She goes to answer it and finds a box. Inside is a whistle with a note that says, "If you ever need any help with the school, give me a call."

The movie kicks off by really showcasing an acoustic guitar. They couldn’t have more shots of this guitar if they tried. We’re in a bar where a woman is singing a lovely version of Here We Come A-Wassailing. Her name is Maggie, and she announces she’s about to do a show in Chicago and open for Dalton Blake! But then her manager shows up and tells her that the big opening gig… is off. However, he gives her a new phone with a bunch of fancy apps on it. She responds, “Nah, I’ve got my reliable flip phone right here, bud.”

With no reason to stay in Chicago, she hops in her old van and heads home to Ed’s Christmas Tree Farm. It’s a family-run lot, and her parents are thrilled to have her back.

Cut to New York City, where we meet two siblings who clearly don’t like each other and whose dad has just died. Their lawyer is reading the will, and one item in particular catches their attention: a board seat that will go to whichever sibling has a higher net worth at Christmas. He’s Archer, and she’s Piper. They didn’t have a normal childhood or normal Christmases, but they do have a picture of themselves in front of Ed’s Christmas Tree Lot.

Back at the lot, Maggie’s best friend asks her to consider directing the Christmas play.

Archer is staring at the picture and decides to search for the lot. He rents a cabin and heads to the lot. When he arrives, he tells Maggie’s mom he wants to get a tree for the first time as an adult. She encourages him to cut his own and suggests that he go with Maggie. It turns out he runs the company that created all the fancy apps she hates. When she finds out, she turns on him and gets him out of there as quickly as possible. But when she learns her manager can’t book her anywhere, she starts to feel guilty for being mean and goes to apologize. She is shocked to find him putting the Christmas tree outside in a tub of water. When she asks about his family, he avoids the question and gives her baked goods.

Maggie begins to open up about her failing career and how her manager is pushing her to embrace the tech. Archer says, “I think it’s important to have a balance.” Maybe he’s not so bad after all.

The next day, Piper and her kids show up. It turns out they had the same idea. The kids join the Christmas play, and Archer gives them a tutorial on his cool app. Maggie realizes, “Oh, that actually is kind of neat.”

Maggie and her family start inviting Archer and his family to all the fun Christmas activities, and they’re all loving it.

The next day, Archer pitches a new app to Maggie—live-streaming performances—and wants Maggie to be on the test stream. There’s still a lot to figure out, but she’s interested.

Maggie’s dad gets on social media and talks about the app, which goes viral and causes Archer’s net worth to rise. When Piper finds out, she leaves with the kids.

Archer has a heart-to-heart with Maggie, and the sparks are flying, but she gets a call from her old manager and considers going back to work with him. Archer thinks that’s a bad idea and tells her she’s better than that guy.

It’s the night of the big Christmas play, and they’re going to live-stream it on the app. Piper shows up with the kids, and they make up and agree to sit on the board together.

Just as the performance is about to start, the power goes out, but that’s nothing for some small-town charm. They manage to get the power back up, and the show is a hit. The kids sing, and then it’s Maggie’s turn. She crushes it, and the app loves her.

After she gets off stage, Maggie makes up with Archer, and they share a kiss.

The movie kicks off with Santa delivering presents. He is down to one reindeer and facing the worst storm on record. But that’s not going to stop him from delivering gifts to Wellington at Sea. He falls off a roof, and Santa says, “I think we need to go back to the school play on December 22nd.”

We meet Danny, a new kid in town who doesn’t want anyone to notice him, except for his crush, Sam. There’s also the director of the play, Bernadette, and the star of the play, Charlie, who is Sam’s brother.

Bernadette comes on stage and announces that this is going to be a fresh take on the story of Jesus, featuring hip song remakes like Wannabe and Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday.

Of course, they all live in the charming town of Wellington at Sea, which is known for its love of Christmas.

But everything is about to get very complicated because of the snow.

Everyone wakes up on the 23rd to a winter wonderland. Everyone is aware that it’s a snow day except for Danny. He makes it to school just in time to see Ms. Trapper, his grumpy teacher, who tells him he should stay and work on his studies since his mom is at work. So, he spends the day learning physics via snowmen. It turns out Ms. Trapper is very skilled at snow.

Sam and Charlie spend the day tormenting their neighbor and getting in trouble for it, receiving a stern reminder that Santa Claus is coming to town.

Bernadette spends the day with her extended family, wishing they wouldn’t do the same thing every year.

It’s Christmas Eve morning, and Charlie wastes no time getting into trouble by freeing a bunch of caged turkeys.

Danny spends the day trying to figure out how to talk to Sam when he sees her at her family’s shop later. He also receives bad news from his dad—he won’t be home for Christmas due to the snow.

Meanwhile, all the adults in Bernadette’s family end up getting stranded in the snow with no way to get home.

Back to the beginning: Santa is coming to save everyone’s Christmas, but the blizzard is really something.

Of course, Santa knows all. He whips up something special for Danny.

He manages to get all the presents down the chimney at Bernadette’s house.

And, of course, Sam gets what she wants. However, Santa thinks Charlie is naughty, so he leaves nothing for her. But Sam and Charlie are twins, and Santa mistook them, so he left the gifts on Charlie’s bed. When Charlie realizes what Santa did, she puts all the gifts on Sam’s bed.

Santa receives an alert that a naughty kid has turned nice, so he turns back to make sure Charlie knows she is officially on the nice list.

It’s Christmas morning, and Charlie is shocked to see the gifts.

Bernadette decides it’s her job to guide the kids in making this Christmas special and new, just like the play.

Danny is excited to see his amazing Christmas present but is sad to find out that his mom unexpectedly has to go to work. While moping around, he notices that his neighbor, Ms. Trapper, looks awfully lonely. Since they had some fun building snowmen together, he figures, what could it hurt? When she finds out his mom is at work, they work together to surprise his mom with a magical igloo lit with Christmas lights and a wonderful Christmas dinner.

As Bernadette’s parents finally make it home, they realize that they can’t find her younger sister, who has taken a game of hide-and-seek very seriously.

So the whole town comes together to find her, thanks in part to Danny and Sam, who are now officially a couple.

The next day, everyone shows up for the annual Boxing Day cold plunge and celebrates the beauty of Wellington at Sea.
