MONSTERS: Faith and the Problem of Pain

    For THEIR Comfort

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:6-7 NIV

    __________

    2 Corinthians 1:6-7 NIV

6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

    Hebrews 2:18 NIV

18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

    Matthew 11:28 NIV

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

    John 16:33 NIV

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

    Romans 8:28 NIV

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

    1) KEEP DOING THE WORK

    2 Corinthians 1:6 NIV

6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.

    2 Corinthians 2:4 NIV

4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

    James 5:10-11 NIV

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

    1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

    2) PRAY FOR A WAY

    Romans 8:28 NIV

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

    Philippians 1:12 NIV

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.

    Philippians 1:19-25 NIV

19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,

    3) SHARE BEFORE YOU ARE THERE

    2 Corinthians 1:7 NIV

7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

    Galatians 6:2 NIV

2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

    Romans 12:15 NIV

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

    John 1:46 NIV

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

    Genesis 50:20 NIV

20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

MONSTERS: Faith and the Problem of Pain

God FOR Us and WITH Us

    Bobby Humes

    Today's Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:1-4, 4:7-12, & 4:16-18 ESV

    __________

    John 16:33 ESV

33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

    Romans 5:3-4 ESV

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,

    Psalms 119:71 ESV

It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

    2 Corinthians 1:1-4 ESV

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God that is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

    2 Corinthians 4:7-12 ESV

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

    2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

    1) THE FATHER

    2 Corinthians 1:3 ESV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

    Micah 7:18-19 MSG

Where is the god who can compare with you - wiping the slate clean of guilt, Turning a blind eye, a deaf ear, to the past sins of your purged and precious people? You don't nurse your anger and don't stay angry long, for mercy is your specialty. That's what you love most. And compassion is on its way to us. You'll stamp out our wrongdoing. You'll sink our sins to the bottom of the ocean.

    2 Corinthians 1:4 ESV

who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

    2) THE SON

    2 Corinthians 1:5 ESV

For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

    1 Peter 4:12-13 ESV

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

    2 Corinthians 1:6 ESV

If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.

    Isaiah 48:10 ESV

Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.

    3) THE BROKEN

    1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV

    2 Corinthians 12:10 ESV

    2 Corinthians 4:8-12 ESV

    2 Corinthians 4:10 ESV

LEGO: A Foundation That LastsFaith WinsJon FredricksToday's Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV__________ 2 Corinthians 1:24 NIV24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm. Hebrews 10:38 NIVAnd, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” Matthew 25:23 NIV“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Luke 18:8 NIVI tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” Hebrews 11:1 NASB1995Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV7 … because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 1) PRIORITIZES NEARNESS2 Corinthians 12:1-4 NIVI must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. 3 And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— 4 was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. Mark 9:7-8 NIV7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 2) CHOOSES GRATITUDE2 Corinthians 12:7-8 NIV 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV Matthew 14:19 NIVAnd he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 3) LIVES SURRENDER2 Corinthians 12:10 NASB1995 Hebrews 13:5 NIVKeep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Philippians 4:11-13 NIV James 4:15 NIVInstead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” Luke 1:38 NIV“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. Romans 14:8 NIVIf we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 4) DRIPS WITH STRENGTH2 Corinthians 12:10 NIV Philippians 4:6-7 NIV6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV Acts 4:13 NIVWhen they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Hebrews 10:38 NIVAnd, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. Matthew 25:23 NIV“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
