A blockbuster of an episode this week, as Pip sits down for a face to face chat with pure acting royalty Michael Fassbender! Far from the a short 3 minute press-junket soundbite interview, Pip has some quality real life facetime with Michael, who is (at the time of this podcast release) out there grinding on the promo for his new film 'The Snowman', directed by Tomas Alfredson and adapted from the novel by Jo Nesbø. A wonderful and warm chat, as we discover what Michael has been doing in the past year (racing Ferraris and surfing), but also get deep into the whole business - how he was born in Germany and was subsequently moved to Ireland at 2, his love of travel and how the acting profession broadens that experience hugely, how his career path could have branched off into an entirely alternate universe, and all manner of satisfying, filling movie gossip and insider knowledge. A great Friday spot for you this week, as Pip sits down with director Coralie Fargeat and actor Matilda Lutz, creator and star of the indie horror film ‘Revenge’. All kinds of aspects are covered including of course the main elements of the film itself, the process of working with a smaller budget and the knock-on effects that has (and the imagination it inspires), crossings of languages and how it can help with an international release, dealing with foreign distributors, the audition process, darker entertainment from directors such as David Cronenberg, the film set out in Morocco and working in the cold, working with that amount of blood in such a small space (I’m sure a lot of horror fans’ ears just pricked up!), trusting the audience with your world and the importance of the director and actor relationship. And a lot more. A packed episode then, you could say! ENJOY! And go see the film if you get an opportunity…

This week Pip continues the Distraction Pieces tradition of appraising the cinematic output of the year just passed - it's Films Of The Year 2024!

A thorough and - crucially - personal rundown of all that happened last year in the world of feature films, major and independent, big screen and small screen. The whole thing was recorded outside in the dead of Winter, so by all means don't feel like you need to mimic those surroundings. This is probably more suitable for a warm and dry environment at your leisure, but wherever you choose it's a nice way to look back in fondness on a really great year in films.

It's obvious but it must be re-emphasised each year - this is not YOUR list of favourite films. It is Pip's. if Pip makes a choice, this does not remove your own choice. It does not mean you are wrong in your own choices. You know this already but you'd be surprised at how some folks might misinterpret these things. It's all love in here. Enjoy, make some notes, rewatch some goodies and maybe make some new acquaintances in the bargain. ENJOY!
