How strange it is to think about the idiom “keep the home fires burning,” while witnessing the catastrophic and ongoing fires in California. The phrase comes from the 1914 song “Keep the Home Fires Burning (Till the Boys Get Home)." The song was written to encourage families to stay strong while their boys were shipped off to fight in World War I. In modern usage, the phrase has come to represent comfort and stability. In the midst of trauma, how do we match loss, worry, and anxiety with a sense of hope, optimism, and love? How do we redefine our understanding of “home” in order to strengthen our families and our neighborhoods? We are inspired by Maria Shriver’s essay “What Angels Do,” published in her weekly newsletter, https://www.mariashriversundaypaper.com/what-angels-do/, as well as the essay by Buddhist teacher Thich That Hanh, https://plumvillage.org/articles/our-true-home.
