  • Get the Milk! Forget Motivations, Focus On Objectives When Preparing A Character | Electric Secrets
    Jan 17 2025

What's my motivation? What's your motivation? What's anybody's motivation? In this episode of Dedicated to the Craft, Scott Leon Smith sets to work to dismantle the preconceived notions actors (and their critics) have when it comes to the word (and mindset) behind "motivation."

As an actor, your job is to act. And to act, you must be able to define your own objectives. At the end of the day, you (your interpretation of your character, your surroundings, and your relationships) is a concept that can be acted upon. Rather than looking externally for something to motivate you to take an action, think of acting as a verb - something you can do - rather than something you are waiting for as a catalyst that ultimately results in an action.

It is important to know what's motivating your character to do the things that they're doing, but ultimately it's up to you to find the actions and the objectives of the character.

Subscribe to Dedicated to the Craft and listen as Scott works to demystifying the theater profession by offering a foundation for creative life, and reinvestment in the creative process.
