Ep.27 | Why you feel the urge to save others

  • Résumé

  • In this powerful episode riN dives into the urgent, often overwhelming feeling of wanting to save someone—whether it's a friend, a partner, or even a stranger. Why do we feel compelled to rescue others? Is it the "rescuer" archetype, the empath - at play, or is it something deeper, like unresolved trauma or a desire to distract ourselves from our own pain? She breaks down the psychology behind this intense drive to help, why it can be harmful, and how we can learn to step back and let others find their own path. With real-life examples and practical insights, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why you feel the need to "fix" and how to release that urge in a way that promotes true healing—for both you and the people you care about.

Tune in for this eye-opening conversation and discover how to shift from a place of rescue to one of support, empowering both yourself and others to grow.

Here are five somatic techniques to help people overcome the urge to "save" or rescue others:

    1. Mammalian Diving Reflex: Submerging your face in cold water activates the body’s natural calming response, helping to reduce stress and emotional overwhelm, allowing you to reset your urge to rescue.
    2. Grounding Techniques: By focusing on the sensation of your feet on the ground or using your hands to touch a solid surface, you reconnect to the present moment, calming your nervous system and breaking the cycle of reactive behaviour.
    3. Box Breathing: Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and pause for 4 to engage your parasympathetic nervous system, calming anxiety and promoting clear thinking before taking any action.
    4. Body Scanning: Starting from your toes and moving up to your head, tune into the physical sensations of your body to help release tension and ground yourself, making it easier to observe and let go of the urge to fix others.
    5. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tensing and then releasing different muscle groups in your body helps to relieve physical stress and reset your nervous system, giving you more control over impulsive reactions to save or rescue.
