The author, Santiago Sanz Sánchez, argues that Ratzinger's thought is more concerned with the reality of creation than may initially appear, as he examines Ratzinger's extensive writings on the subject, including his lectures and sermons. The paper examines how Ratzinger, in his engagement with Teilhard, explores the implications of evolution for the Christian concept of creation, viewing the evolution of the cosmos and the development of consciousness as a trajectory towards Christ as the ultimate “Omega” of all things. Ratzinger also confronts the atheistic argument of Monod, who sees the evolution of life as driven by “chance and necessity,” highlighting the contradiction between a purely deterministic view of the universe and the purposeful nature of living organisms, and arguing for a more rationally based understanding of creation as an act of Divine Intelligence.
