  • S04E12: DESERT DUMPS. Outsourcing the Migration Problem to Africa
    Mar 5 2025

For a year journalists connected to the Lighthouse Reports investigated the treatment of asylum seekers and migrants in North Africa, particularly focusing on the roles of various governments and militias in facilitating deportations and human rights abuses. In this episode one of those journalists and a co-founder of Lighthouse Reports, Klaas van Dijken, discusses the systematic arrests, racial profiling, and the complicity of the European Union in these operations. He highlights the dire conditions faced by migrants and the investigative methods used to uncover these truths. We discuss the historical context of migration from North Africa to Europe and the political will that shapes refugee crises as well as the role of smuggling networks and the impact of media coverage on public awareness and policy accountability.

    SPECIAL GUEST:

Klaas van Dijken - co-founder of Lighthouse Reports, independent journalist

  • DISINFO WATCH E01: Headlines: Fact or Fiction?
    Feb 27 2025

Check out our latest production! A Disinfo Watch is our answer to the spread of disinformation about refugees and asylum seekers in the media. In a light and funny format we point out the ridiculousness of some fake news regarding refugees. Play the game of Headlines with us and guess which ones are true and which are fake and check if you did better than our co-hosts Doug and Rasheed.

    And don’t forget our homework:

    1. What’s the average duration of a Greek trial for smuggling in 2019 alone?

    2. Which of those headlines is true:

    A) Crete sees a surge in migrant arrivals in the first days of 2025.

    B) For the first time in 5 years, Crete sees decline in migrant arrivals in early 2025.
