This is your Boom, Bust & Bodies: Murder in Oil Country podcast.
Welcome to Boom, Bust & Bodies: Murder in Oil Country. I'm your host, and today we're diving into the dark underbelly of Texas, where oil and true crime collide.
In the heart of East Texas, a small town named Carthage became infamous for a murder that would shake the community to its core. Bernie Tiede, a charismatic mortician, befriended Marjorie Nugent, a wealthy widow. Their friendship turned deadly when Tiede murdered Nugent and hid her body in a freezer. But what's even more shocking is what happened next. Tiede threw parties in Nugent's home, used her money to travel the world, and even sent a letter with her forged signature to withdraw $225,000 from her account.
Tiede's case took a dramatic turn when his new lawyer discovered that he had been a victim of childhood sexual abuse. This revelation led to a reevaluation of Tiede's case, but it didn't change the fact that he had committed a heinous crime. The prosecutors presented evidence of Tiede's theft from Nugent, including financial records showing that he had drained her accounts to almost nothing.
But Tiede's case is just one of many that have left a stain on Texas's oil country. The Texas Killing Fields, a stretch of land near Houston, has been the site of numerous murders and disappearances. One of the earliest victims was Brenda Jones, a 14-year-old girl who disappeared in 1971. Her body was found in Galveston Bay, just a few miles from the Calder Road Oil Field.
The most recent victim was Terressa Vanegas, a 16-year-old girl who was strangled and sexually assaulted in 2006. Her body was found in a field across from Dickinson High School, just a few minutes' drive from the Calder Road Oil Field. The case remains unsolved, leaving the community with more questions than answers.
As we delve deeper into the world of true crime in Texas, we'll explore more cases that have left a lasting impact on the state. From the mysterious death of River Oaks socialite Joan Hill to the murder of Dr. John Hill, we'll unravel the tangled web of crime and corruption that has haunted Texas for decades.
