  • S3E4 - Heidi & Guy Burgess - Part 2
    Feb 17 2025
Part 2 of 2. Lamar and Tom talk with Heidi and Guy Burgess who have been life and professional partners for more than 50 years. They received their PhDs in sociology in the same year from the University of Colorado. In the late 1980s they received a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to start a conflict resolution "theory-building center" that is now known as the Conflict Information Consortium. In addition to directing the Consortium, both Guy and Heidi taught peace and conflict at the University of Colorado, the University of Denver, and in George Mason University's School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, now the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. As Co-Directors of the Consortium, the Burgesses have been able to self-design rather unusual careers which combined theory building, practice, and teaching using theories and strategies from many disciplines, not just sociology. Drawn to complexity and systems theory very early by Kenneth Boulding's work, they almost always tried to focus on the big picture, focusing particularly on difficult conflict problems from international conflicts to environmental and public policy conflicts in the United States. In the early 1990's they also began focusing on the use of computer-based information systems and the Internet to disseminate conflict knowledge to as many people as possible. This resulted in the development of two extremely large knowledge bases: CRInfo (The Conflict Resolution Information Source) and the follow-on Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project which produced a second very large online knowledge base called Beyond Intractability (BI) The Burgess' current focus is on hyper-polarization and constructive approaches to conflict. They have a free Substack newsletter that focuses on those topics, and will soon be releasing (on BI) a free guide (i.e., growing online book) on those topics. • S3E2 - More Conversation on The Social Dilemma - Part 2
    Jan 20 2025
What is your relationship with social media? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Do you avoid it? What if there are good reasons to love it, hate it, and avoid it - all at once? In this podcast Lamar and Tom are joined by their friend, colleague, and charity culture catalyst Ed Shrager from London. They each had the assignment of watching the Netflix documentary/docudrama “The Social Dilemma” that provides an inside look at social media through the perspective of the people who developed it in the past…but now question its value. In this two-part podcast they discuss the film and its relevance. In this episode, Part 2, they will do a deeper dive in their discussion of the film focusing what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and the most critical takeaways each had from the film. In Part 1 they do their best movie critic impersonations by reviewing and rating the film. If you haven’t listened to or watched Part 1, we recommend you do that before diving into Part 2. • S2E19 - Donald Trump's Cabinet Picks and Our Thanksgiving Special
    Nov 25 2024

During this past couple of weeks President-elect Donald Trump has been making nominations for his cabinet. In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom talk about a few of his nominations. Please note, though, that politics and news changes quickly and so did at least one of his nominees discussed in this podcast. By the time we posted this podcast to the internet about 4 days later, the nominee had withdrawn. That’s how things happen sometimes, and so we have to be prepared to swerve and then keep going. Also, this podcast is also a Thanksgiving Holiday Special for Lamar and Tom as they really talk turkey (with occasional bad puns). And, of course, they talk a bit of Hawkeye football and basketball.

    Nov 11 2024

    The 2024 Presidential Election

The 2024 Presidential Election is over. It’s been a long and eventful political season. In this episode Lamar and Tom discuss their thoughts on it.

    About This Episode

They also talk about errant tumbleweeds, meteors (or possibly space junk), and upcoming podcasts.

Please note: In the last few minutes of the podcast, a software issue caused our images to "flip" (change places) on the screen. You are not imagining it and it is nothing to be concerned about. It did not impact the flow of the podcast. We just didn't want you to think you were seeing things.
