Give to Everyone: Stop Practicing Selective Compassion
“Give to everyone who ask of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again” - Luke 6:30
This verse comes from the middle of some of Jesus’s most challenging teachings. Jesus is challenging us to think, act, and react differently. The sequence ends with Jesus’s declaration that we will experience our highest level of wellbeing if we do.
So why give to everyone? To avoid making ourselves the judge. To share the mercy, grace and forgiveness that we’d like to receive ourselves.
It’s easy for us to help people who we feel deserve it… people in bad situations through no fault of their own. If we have any love in our hearts, it’s easy to help folk like this.
But what about people who find themselves in bad situations largely because of their lack of character and judgment, because of their poor choices and bad habits? Our well of empathy for them tends to run dry.
We can’t be who or what Jesus we are calls us to be until we stop practicing selective compassion and start practicing compassion universally.
