In this episode of Why Wars Happened History Podcast, we go into the drama in colonial Virginia! After Governor Berkeley's death, Lord Culpeper finally shows up—two years late and totally out of touch with the icky lower classes in Virginia. The Virginia Assembly isn't having any of the king's orders, sparking major tension. We unpack Culpeper's shady money schemes, where he cheats soldiers and colonists, and his weak leadership that ultimately helps the Assembly build a sense of self, separate from the governor. By the end, Culpeper ditches Virginia for the comforts of England, leaving the colony in chaos.
