Your patient’s progress has stalled… but is it actually a problem?
We expect healing to happen in a straight line, but the reality? Plateaus are completely normal. No one improves at the same steady rate throughout their entire recovery.
So when a patient isn’t progressing as fast as you (or they) think they should, it’s time to step back and assess:
🔍 Is the patient actually struggling with this, or is it YOUR anxiety creeping in?
🔍 Are your expectations and timeline realistic based on their condition?
🔍 Have you given your interventions enough time to work? Could you go deeper?
If progress is truly stalled, it’s time to take a fresh look. Revisit their intake paperwork, re-evaluate your hypothesis, and consider a different approach.
But here’s the truth—most of the time, we just aren’t giving our interventions the time they need to work. Patience is key, both for us and our patients.
Let’s reframe how we think about plateaus and make sure we’re not letting our own expectations get in the way of patient care!
