“I bet you dread praying. Dread  is probably a strong word but if you’re like me a few years ago, you know you should pray but you don’t do it. Or you try it, get about 1 minute into praying, and are done. You have probably heard your pastor or priest talk about prayer, you may have even purchased a few books on prayer. Or you’ve listened to several sermons on prayer that had you hyped up to pray and to see God move in your life but then after about 4 minutes, or two days, it all fell flat.

    Guidelines for Prayer

    1. Short prayers are good prayers.
      1. The Our Father is literally 16 seconds if you are taking your time.
      2. Psalm 23 is about 32 seconds
    2. Don’t try to use your own words.
      1. Pray the Psalms
      2. Pray the Our Father from Jesus
      3. Pray the confession of faith in the Apostles creed
      4. Pray the prayers of the saints - I have two favorites from the Saints - Holy Spirit and I arise today by Saint Patrick.
    3. Pray more often, not for longer periods of time.
      1. Hop in your car, pray for safety
      2. Say “god bless you” often
      3. Say “Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me”
      4. What if you had a single prayer memorize that you said at the top of each hour?
      5. You don’t need to spend one hour in utterances in the morning - that might be what Jesus means by vain repetition, not repeating the same prayer over and over.
