“Every company that uses data that is running any kind of analytics for anything – and maybe even if they’re not – needs to have that role. You may not be a large enough organization to have a CDO title sitting in the ivory tower; however, someone needs to be identifying what data the company has, how they can use it, how they can solve problems with it, and really be focused on that. When we think about business objectives or business needs, this person should be focused on that, but also there’s whitespace like “how do we minimize attrition,” and those kinds of things. And there are ways you can use data to do that. So there needs to be somebody who has as part of their role to identify what data we’ve got, identify how we can use data, and I would say that that applies to almost any organization.”

I guess I wouldn’t expect a CDO to be dealing with hardware at all. Maybe what’s on the hardware, potentially, but maybe not even that. Maybe just the data. How is that decided? Is it a standard, or is it done per organization and decided amongst the team?
